Everyone is making up wish lists for things they want to see on the fourth season of Torchwood. While the thing I want above all else is to find out that it’s really the third season and it’s opening with a quest to find and reanimate Owen, followed by the discovery that Tosh really IS still conscious (if not alive) and powering the Hub’s mainframe, I realize this is not going to happen. (I accept reality and have come to terms with it but that doesn’t mean I liked the mini-series. It was far too different from the way I saw the characters . YMMV, but that’s how I felt.)
So since that can’t be what happens, here is the opening scene I really want. Fill in missing details as you like and feel free to substitute some detail you prefer for minor ones I’ve used. I’m not married to the special effects, but I am very sure I like the concept.
It’s very, very early in the morning. We see Gwen walking from her car (which is parked somewhere, I don’t care where, but she has to walk at least a few blocks to get where she’s going. She arrives at a somewhat run down looking office building and enters, using a fingerprint scan and a character (not necessarily numeric) code. Once she’s inside we see that the somewhat shabby appearance of the building is deceptive. The interior is clean and bright, but it still looks like a standard old office building in any city. Gwen climbs stairs to a higher floor (I don’t much care which one) and comes to an interior door with a retinal and fingerprint scanner. Once inside the door she goes past a very large and old fashioned looking desk, the kind that secretaries use as fortresses to keep anyone from getting past them into the boss’ office, and then keys in a series of characters to open another interior door. THIS room is her office, with a pleasant window and a credenza behind her large executive style desk.
On the credenza are photos of a variety of people, including Rhys, a beautiful round-cheeked baby, the baby WITH Rhys, a photo showing both Owen and Tosh (not the one that was destroyed in the Hub explosion, of course), at least one of Jack, one of the entire team from back when, maybe even one of Suzie, and in a very elegant frame, a picture of Ianto and Jack. Maybe it’s a posed picture, or maybe it’s one of the pair goofing around or whatever, but it’s of the two of them. And she’s got a picture of Rhiannon Davies whole family, too. It’s not as odd as you might imagine. Read on.
She opens a TORCHWOOD BRANDED panel on the return of her desk and exchanges the weapon in her harness for a different one. From the noises outside we realize that whoever is her secretary (if it’s got to be Lois Habiba, that’s okay. I like Lois but I think I’d rather see her in the field…then again, Ianto was supposed to be an admin and he got to use that stun gun REALLY WELL a lot.) (BTW, I didn’t care for Johnson. She will never appear in my fantasy scene. If you liked her, feel free to stick her in somewhere.) Her mobile phone rings. She juggles things in her jacket pockets and you realize she has more than one mobile. From the way she answers it’s obvious this is the one for her co-workers. The conversation is about whoever is on the phone needing to purchase specially made parts for the new Torchwood van, which is this time really a panel van without the branding on it but you won’t find that out until later. Somewhere in the conversation we realize she’s talking to Ianto’s brother in law Johnny. I wish we could have been flies on the wall when Rhi heard about THAT hiring decision!
An argument between Gwen’s secretary and someone else starts in the outer room and Gwen gets off the phone, after suggesting Johnny talk to Rhys about sourcing the parts through Harwood’s. Just as she disconnects, her office door swings open (and, yes, I realize that ought not to be possible given the security but bear with me.) In strides Jack bloody Harkness, coat and all. (I don’t know if I want Alonso there yet. I’m still caught up in shipping Jack and Lady Christina so I’ll worry about that another day. No one came with Jack this day, though.) He stops short at the edge of Gwen’s desk and stares. After a moment, she stares back. The chemistry is still there but this isn’t delicate Gwen with the crush. This is mommy/wife/TW Commander Gwen and she’s not sure she’s happy to see Jack now that they’ve rebuilt. After a moment, his stance softens a little and he looks at her credenza. He smiles at the picture of the Rhys and the baby, frowns a little at the picture of the Davies clan, then stops and stares at the picture of him with Ianto. He leans over and puts the photo face-down. “It’s too soon,” he says, his face gentling. “Someday, I promise. Not today.”
And thus begins season four of Torchwood.
THIS IS MY DREAM. Since the Dallas solution isn’t available.
BTW, I haven't quite decided if I actually want to see the fourth season. I won't decide until someone I trust has already watched some of it and given me their opinion. But if that's the opening I'll be there with wings on.
NOT FAIRY WINGS!
I will have comments on what I am afraid of in season 4 later. Right now I'm late for my bus home.
