On the recommendation of

Dogfight.
Let's get one thing straight. I LOVE River Phoenix. Fifteen years on (my lord, has it been THAT long?), there's a part of my mind that absolutely REFUSES to believe that he's dead. I think that a large chunk of Leonardo DiCaprio's career is due to River's untimely death. But Leo is the poor man's River, in my humble opinion.
Lili Taylor, too, is always amazingly consistent, and is not afraid to make choices that may render her character unlikeable, like her character Lisa on Six Feet Under. Her character here, however, is very likeable.
Dogfight is a quiet little film, with a rather unattractive plotline. On the brink of shipping out to Vietnam, a bunch of marines hold a "Dogfight"-- a party where the men have to bring the most unattractive girl they can find-- the marine who brings the ugliest girl wins. Terrible, right? But out of such hatred and contempt comes a sweet story about connection and loss of innocence.
With some of the sweetest, most honest kissing scenes ever put on screen. Awkward, unsure, overwhelmed, absolutely AUTHENTIC.
Recommended.
