Standard bar: max capacity?

Apr 19, 2011 15:35

A while ago I got some used weightlifting equipment, good for a starter-newbie (or re-starter or newbie-again, like myself). I haven't touched them since going to my local gym for a while, but since my membership is about to expire and I can't afford to rejoin at this time, I am dusting off my stuff at home. The main component of interest is the standard bar. By the use of the word "standard" I mean those shiny (chrome-plated? stainless steel? don't know) bars that are *NOT* Olympic bars. I don't know what else they are called, so I am calling them "standard." It is 84" (2.13 metres) long and about 18 lbs. (8.1 kgs.).

Bottom line: Can anyone tell me what is the maximum capacity of a standard bar? I doubt I'll reach max. capacity anytime soon (if ever), but would like to know for future reference.

I am also going to look around for more used plates on craiglist.org since I am at the upper border limits for my current plates (weight plates from 2 - 10 lbs. now so I am hoping to find primarily used 25 lb. plates). Also I *ASSUME* weight plates - for standard bars - are *DUH* standard. If you know differently, please correct me ASAP since I am still learning about how to look for weight equipment, mixing and matching when necessary.

Edits and additions.
P.S. No, I won't be bending this standard bar like normalcyispasse did to his local gym's Olympic bar in his infamous mindboggling feat a few years ago, but I still want to know for reference. Just in case I have (1) a low-grade bar and/or (2) I surprise myself and reach max. capacity within the foreseeable future.
