Mildly rusted plates: fix?

Dec 17, 2010 16:24

A while ago, I got some free hand-me-down exercise equipment that included a chrome bar (I think it's 35 lbs.?) and some iron plates from 3 lbs. to 10 lbs.

Unfortunately some of the plates are slightly rusted. Though I can still get these plates on and off the bar, I'm wondering if there is some sort of easy fix for the rust since I am afraid it might get worse. FYI I have iron cookware (home iron skillets) that I've seasoned myself in the oven, but I suspect this might be dangerous, or won't do for weightlifting plates.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get rid of the rust on these otherwise very good plates?

Also a note: I am a very limited fixed income at this point. This stuff is pretty good, just somewhat neglected by their former owner because he outgrew them. It's a luxury I'm very grateful to have and want to keep.
