patella surgery and working out.

I'm not certain if this is the right community to post this question, but I can't think of anywhere else.
My left patella has been dislocated so much that my doctor informed me that it's beyond rehab. When I asked him about doing deadlifts (I was up to 90#!) and squats(45#), he said that was about the worst type of exercises to do. FWIW, he's the primary physician for a university hockey team, and is a board certified Orthopedic doctor. I went to my gym (which is also does physical therapy as it's main business) and the P.T agreed. The best exercise for me is doing squats against the wall with a ball between my knees. I'm going for a CAT scan next week.
Soooo, my question is has anyone here had the surgery to correct a luxating patella and how successful was it? Were you able to use your knee without fear of dislocation? Was it back to normal?

TL,DR version: Patella dislocation since I was 14 (I'm 44) surgery inevitable, how successful was operation for you, could you do strenuous workouts after such as kickboxing?
