Night had long since fallen over the Seretei by the time Abarai Renji finished his work. Even his captain had gone home to bed.Looking up at the clock he was shocked at what it read.12:06."Shit,"he cursed.He had to be back at this desk again in a short seven hours.Hurrying to collect his things, he ran out out of his office, hoping to get home in time to get a couple hours of sleep.As he reached his room in the sixth company's barrack Renji stopped abruptly at the sight of a light on.Everyone should have gone to bed hours ago.Noticing the light was coming from his captain's room he gently knocked on the door with curiosity.Worry came over him when there was no answer.
"I'm coming in," he called and without further warning he opened the door."Taichou?" he called.Looking around the room he saw his captain slumped in the corner of the room.Blood pooled on the floor emitting from a knife wound in the captain's stomach."Taichou!Taichou!Byakuya!"Renji cried out in shock."HELP!"he called hoping desperately someone would hear him.Ripping his shihaukushou,Renji tried to stop the bleeding while still calling for help.Hearing a sound,Renji looked up.A young squad member,Rikichi,was trembling in the doorway."Go.Get help!"Renji yelled not really caring that he scared the boy.
After that the next moments were a blur.He remembered his captain gasps for air.The coughs of blood.The gentle hands pulling him from Byakuya's pale body.Then all went black.
The next thing he knew he was waking up in the fourth division.Suddenly remembering what happened he shot up.Worry and fear wrenched his gut.
"You should lay down," said a quiet voice.Unohana-taichou stood next to his bed checking Renji's vitals.
"He is fine."
"He.What.How?"Renji stammered surprised at her words.
"Kuchiki-taichou will be fine.He is resting waiting for you to come see him.If you are good and rest for the afternoon,I will let you see him later."
"Thank you."said Renji determined to to be good in order to see Byakuya sooner.
By that night Renji had recovered from his fainting spell and was ready to see Byakuya.The captain was awake when Renji arrived.Besides not being able to sit up without help and having his middle covered in bandages the man seemed alright.
"Hello Taichou."
"Hello Renji"
"Are you feeling better?"
"Yes. And you."
"Yeah."
The room quieted to an awkward silence.Several minutes later the silence was broken by Byakuya's deep voice."Thank you for saving me."Renji was shocked.He hadn't heard a word of thanks from his captain's mouth since he thanked Ichigo on Soykoku hill.
"It was nothing," he said blushing."That is what I am for."
"You are a good man Renji.Do not ever sell yourself short."
"Uh..yes sir,"Renji answered hesitatingly.
"Renji?"
"Yes?"
"Would you like to go to dinner with me after I have recovered?"As a thank you of course."Renji smirked looking at the glint of fondness in his captain's eyes.
"Of course," he said both as an answer and a tease.Maybe his Taichou would be willing to grant after dinner sex as a thank you too.
