· The novel as a whole symbolizes the extent of which man can be savage, and how little it really takes to set us off.

· “The forest glade in which Simon sits in, symbolizes the loss of innocence.” (sparknotes.com) - At first there’s natural peace, then later on in the novel, he returns and he finds the head of a bloody sow.
· Lord of the Flies represents evil, loss of innocence, and the devil.
· Simon symbolizes the goodness of man-kind. Some people say there are similarities between him and Jesus. Simon is the one who finds the truth of the novel (what the beast is) then the other boys kill him, (sacrifice him). Simon’s conversation with the Lord of the Flies can be linked with Jesus’ conversation with the devil during his 40 days in the wilderness. (Information from sparknotes.com)
· Conch shell - Authority, power, order, and civilization. - When conch shell is broken, what little order there was left, is completely gone.
· Piggy’s glasses - Technology, intelligence, the ability to see farther ahead. (See more consequences.) Other boys are short sighted.
· Signal Fire represents the boys’ desire to be rescued from the island. As it diminishes, so does their desire.
· The beast represents the instinct of savagery that exists in all of us. As the boys get to be more barbaric, the more real the beast seems to become.
· When the Lord of the Flies promises to have “fun” with Simon, this “fun” is foreshadowing his death.
· Jack symbolizes the need for power and the savagery that exists in society, and anarchy, or maybe even fascism.
· Ralph represents democracy.
· Piggy symbolizes knowledge and morality. Ralph could have possibly given in to the “beast” if it weren’t for Piggy.
· Island is a microcosm. There is a war going on in both worlds. Ralph playing on the beach, pretending to be a plane. Governments.
