As much as I wish to answer your question, I could not speak for everybody.
The basis of "there is a someone for every person" is the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best i.e. HOPE.
And the definition of HOPE is not DREAM.
It depends on whether the person is actively or passively "hoping". Take this example - If one is just to sit down and do nothing while waiting for money to fall down from the sky, IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. I would say this is called "hopelessly waiting".
And say if one is fat (just an example) but he does not bathe/brush his teeth/comb his hair/has totally no grooming, again HOPING FOR SOMEONE TO APPEAR is another impossible thing. Fat hope!
An ugly (everyone's definition of beauty is different) person can also dress and carry himself well. The same goes for a fat person. (just a example again, the same goes for many other different types/kinds of people).
Hope is not dream.
Yes, you should have a realistic dream. And whether you wait or not, depends on your definition of hope. Be it based on religion, social norms, perceptions or values.
For me, I believe God (not refering any specific religion) has everything planned for me, and everything happens for a reason. If nobody appeared in my life, I will believe that God wants me to learn something from it. Maybe independence? Maybe something else has been installed for me? Who knows. :S
