“Donna, hurry up!” The Doctor knocked on the TARDIS door for the tenth time in a half hour. He paced a few feet away and kicked a rock off the riverbank, watching with some satisfaction as it skipped halfway across the water before sinking under the surface. A somewhat timid tap on the shoulder had him spinning around. “Blimey you're quiet sometimes,” he said before his air was stolen away by the sight his companion presented.
“Don't laugh,” Donna warned as she adjusted a stay in her bodice which was poking the underside of a rather delicate part.
The Doctor licked suddenly dry lips. Donna wore an emerald green dress that was the height of fashion for 16th Century England. The bodice squeezed her pale full bosom until it threatened to spill out of the dress' confines. Her long red hair was in one braid but wispy tendrils around her face had escaped capture and were now dancing in the same wind that was billowing her skirts. With the background of the unpolluted blue sky, the winding river and the dense forest, she looked like a Waterhouse muse. From the subtle frown of her lip and the shy downturn of her lashes, he could tell she didn't have a clue how beautiful she was just now.
“Well?” she asked nervously, daring a glance.
“You're breathtaking.”
Donna quirked her mouth in that self-deprecating smile that told the Doctor she didn't buy a word of it but appreciated it nonetheless.
Before his better judgment could kick in, he reached out and captured a strand of her free hair and stroked it between his fingers. “Absolutely beautiful,” he said meeting her eyes and holding her gaze.
He knew she could tell he meant it by the tears that swelled in her eyes which she quickly blinked away as she turned her head. “Thanks,” Donna said quietly.
The Doctor took her hand and wrapped it around his arm as he lead her onto the path to the castle.
