I've seen X3 three times now. I was debating whether to post a review or not, but since I see it being universally shat upon, I think I will at least post my random thoughts about it.
I had heard things going in, specifically that Scott, Jean and Xavier would snuff it. And that there would be a Wolverine/Storm romance. I wasn't sure how I felt about the deaths, but I thought the Wolverine/Storm thing was crap and it gave me a bad attitude going into the film. That being said, I don't wish to crap all over anyone who has this as a particular ship. If your ship moves you, by all means stick to it no matter what anyone says. However, to me Wolverine/Storm in the films would be being done simply because Hugh and Hallie are name stars. And that is a stupid reason to alter storylines. I couldn't relax the whole first viewing of it, and not just because of the damn cell phone jockeys and obnoxious punks in the theater. Mainly because at least a couple times, Wolvie/Storm look perilously close to a smooch. Fortunately, that didn't happen, so I was able to watch other things more carefully on subsequent viewings.
First, the positives:
Beast kicked total ass. He was perfect.
Wolverine, as always, was wonderful and Hugh never ceases to amaze me. He's far more tall and handsome than the runt in the comics, but in every single installment, there are several sections which look like someone took panels of the comic and made a flipbook animation.
Shout out to James Marsden for even showing up for filming.
Shadowcat. My fave X-Men character. I was so afraid they'd screw her up. I liked her quite a bit. The commercial promos had me in fear of Slut!Kitty. But, Kitty and Bobby's interactions were actually very innocent (not that they looked that way from the outside/Rogue's perspective) and every instance, Bobby instigated. Phew.
Shout out to Anna Paquin for even showing up for filming. Maybe it was Community Service duty for Darkness? Cause I rented that damn thing, and somebody should have to make up for it somehow :)
Grateful for the fleeting scene of Wolvie/Rogue connection.
Grateful for the one word of Wolvie/Kitty connection (this because of the comic book days nostalgia).
Really enjoyed Magneto in this one. More than in the first two I think.
Cannot get over Angel and Spacker Dave being the same actor.
Jean Grey is much more interesting as Phoenix. Course, that's always been true :)
I totally want that power over belt buckles. Especially Wolverine's.
The Negatives:
No Nightcrawler?
I was promised a Sentinel battle and I get a silhouette with flashlight eyes and then a decapitated robot head? WTF? That were crap.
Apparenly, to defeat Jean Grey, everyone only needed to wrap themselves up in pants. Watch as Wolverine struggles to get to her at the end. Her powers are useless against the protective abilities of PANTS!!!! That is one crappy power :)
The Middle:
The character deaths: not as much a negative as I thought they'd be for me. Cyclops, I've never been real fond of. It's only due to James Marsden's portrayal that I've even come to like the character much at all. Jean, necessary and heartbreaking because of Wolverine. The Professor, this one bothered me the most, but it was the one thing Jean could have done to cement the X-Men (barring Wolverine) into "she has to go" instead of "we can save her". So, likely necessary. And possibly reversed if they continue the franchise thanks to the tag at the end.
My brother had a real problem with Magneto turning his back on human Mystique and her ratting him out. I didn't. I felt it's what would have happened on both their parts. I think he showed his lingering affection for her by leaving her alive once she was "One of them".
Overall, I had a good time with it and will likely try to go again before it leaves theaters. I've a feeling I'll have to wait until DVD when I can watch everything back to back to back before I can comment on how I feel it stands within the series.
Bring on the Wolverine film franchise though :)
Non-spoilery opinion of X3? I liked it. It's not in my all time top 20 or anything, but I had a good time.
And I wouldn't have posted this silly little quiz thingy, but I got Shadowcat. And that's AWESOME!!!!! Kitty Pryde rules :D
You Are Shadowcat
You're like a little sister to some, but others see you as a sex kitten.
You are well trained in martial arts, a bit of a computer geek, and can totally kick butt.
Powers: the ability to "phase" through walls and other physical objects
Which of the X-Men Are You?
