A Day In The Life Of Tom

Or how I ended up with titanium bars through my nipples.

Actually, this post isn't about either of those things. This post is about Martha Nussbaum's Sex And Social Justice, which I have been reading. It is pretty excellent. Actually, it is probably a bit better than that. Maybe my standards have been lowered by reading about justice and gender by way of the internet. I suspect, however, that there is also more to it than that. Sex And Social Justice is just a really well written, really well structured work of philosophy in the analytic tradition. By a person who is passionately engaged in what she does. The Rage and Reason chapter is actually so good that it has made me re-evaluate my understanding of what Andrea Dworkin argues for. And starts with a great section on the difference between philosophers and prophets. The chapter on objectification is conceptually incredibly interesting, and I think it's got a lot of potential to be extended out in interesting ways. The first few chapters are also very well argued (they are about, largely, the left liberal application of universal codes of human values, with corresponding arguments against left liberal relativist rejection of the same.)

It is very good and that makes me want to commend it to other people. It makes me want to write essays. So many essays. And engage with social justice better. And do more philosophy. Yay philosophy!
