----
This is stupid, he tells himself, standing outside of the office. He needs information, and Miles Edgeworth is the only one who can give it to him.
What's a little mortification in the name of saving his client?
He enters the office, and Edgeworth greets him normally--that is, with mild irritation. They spend a few minutes discussing the case, the usual give-and-take, Edgeworth dancing the line between sharing too much and not nearly enough.
It isn't until Phoenix runs out of questions that the awkwardness creeps in. He should just leave, he knows he should leave, but instead he says, "So. Things got pretty crazy on Friday, huh? I barely remember getting home."
It's an out, and Edgeworth knows it. A chance to pretend that it never happened, move on with their lives.
He thinks of the moment that Phoenix had leaned in, the utter shock he'd felt, the excitement and terror pounding in his chest, and he decides that this time, he will not take the easy way out.
