She can't sleep for weeks after. Since they got back to Kurain, Pearly's been making her way to the Master's room in the middle of the night, facing her own demons in the dark. Maya lies awake with her finally snoozing cousin snoring quietly beside her.
It's not the sadness or regret that keeps her up, though she feels plenty of both. It's the idea that she could lose control, that someone could come, uninvited, and take her over.
When she does find sleep, her dreams are muddled, twisted, and when she wakes, all she can remember is Dahlia's long red hair.
