While he is a liar, generally, he's not very manipulative and he doesn't lie out of any malicious intent. His scatterbrained persona is simply one that he's most used to and he tends to revert to most often. He's kind, if forgetful, and has a tendency to "adopt" or become fond of people very quickly.
[WEAKNESSES:] Yanni has difficulty remembering that how he acts is usually an act. He's not as forgetful as he appears, but he's been playing the part for so long and so consistently that he finds it difficult to act honestly with people. His persona has become the only way he really knows how to interact with others. Due to his going into hiding, Yanni also has problems approaching people. He's easily intimidated by others and will quickly back down when confronted by someone stronger, or change the subject. While he does feel strongly for various people, his lack of honest interaction with others makes it difficult for him to express it. Yanni has a tendency to "invent" people's roles in his life and then assume they are the same in reality. For example, Maya. Yanni "invented" Meg and her relationship with him, but now he actually does feel that Maya is his daughter or something close to it. His fantasy has a tendency to become his reality. The problem is that this does not happen to everyone else. Maya may not feel nearly as close to Yanni as he feels to her, and this can get him hurt. This also leaves him very vulnerable to being manipulated by people that he implicitly trusts because of the fantasy role they play in his life. Yanni's life is a constant weave of lies and reality, and it's difficult for him to tell one from the other. Yanni also has difficulty speaking honestly with other people, therefore keeping most of his feeling to himself. He rarely reaches out for comfort or out of loneliness. He had resigned himself to live his life alone before the events of case 4, and now that suddenly there can be people in his life, people who want to be with him and know him, Yanni doesn't want to lose them. This is another reason for why he develops deep attachments to people that he's only known for a little while. He's lonely. Again, this can easily be used against him. He's also physically frail. While he straightened up when he told the truth in court, Yanni is old and generally small. He's not made for combat and therefore can easily be physically hurt. His eyes are also probably somewhat weak, and his hands shake a little. While most of his short naps are faked, he probably does feel tired most of the time.
[APPEARANCE:] Yanni is an old man with silver-gray medium length hair that's unevenly cut. He has a moustache and a goatee and wears a brown hat. He wears a pink overcoat over a beige long-sleeved shirt, a white neck scarf, and beige pants. He most likely has brown eyes. He looks old and feeble, since this is the impression he usually wants to give people. His shoulders are usually slumped and he often has a distant look in his eyes. He also very rarely looks anyone in the eyes, usually looking off to one side or the other, or into the distance. When he's being serious, he stands up straight and can look rather intimidating. He rocks back and forth constantly.
[PERSONALITY:] Generally, Yanni is forgetful but friendly. He's a bit confused and overwhelmed by the sudden interest people have in him, but he's also curious about it. He likes other people and wants to make friends, but he doesn't know how or where to start. He's tired of being alone. He's very willing to "adopt" people into his false family and doesn't mind people who want to view him as some kind of family figure. He tries to be friendly and amiable to most everyone he meets. While he has a tendency to fall asleep if his attention wavers, he generally ramble on about this and that to anyone who will listen. His real personality, if one can call it that, is seen only rarely. It's hard to say how much of the illusion is false or real. However, it seems that Yanni can speak clearly without any "er"s or "yup"s when he wants to, and he has a fairly clear memory of important things that happen in his life. While he can be very serious, even this part of him is still lonely and still seeks out people and companionship.

[BACKGROUND:] Yanni was a bailiff in the court 15 years ago when Gregory Edgeworth lost a case to Manfred von Karma. In the process, Gregory managed to get von Karma penalized in court, which drove von Karma insane. When Yanni, Gregory, and Miles were trapped in an elevator after an earthquake, the lack of air began to cause everyone to panic. Yanni and Gregory started arguing and Miles, desperate to stop it, threw a gun between them. The gun went off, striking von Karma who was standing outside the elevator at the time. Miles passed out at this point, and it can be assumed that Yanni and Gregory did as well, perhaps a few seconds later. von Karma took this opportunity to shoot Gregory in the heart, assuming that Yanni, or Miles, would take the blame. In the case following, most evidence pointed towards Yanni as the culprit, although he stated he was innocent. Maya's mother was employed to contact Gregory, who also stated that Yanni was the one who shot him. In the face of this evidence, Hammond advised (pressured, perhaps) Yanni into claiming temporary insanity, as he saw no other way out of the situation. Hammond made it clear to Yanni that he did not believe that he was innocent and just wanted to get the verdict. Yanni went along with the illusion, faking the scatterbrained personality that would define the rest of his life. While Yanni no doubt wanted to be proven innocent so to continue his life, his temporary insanity plea proved to destroy his life perhaps just as effectively as if he had been convicted. Yanni lost his job, his reputation, and shortly afterwards, his fiance, Polly, committed suicide. While the details are not known as to the circumstances of Polly's death, one can assume it wasn't pleasant. And while it's not made clear, one can easily assume this had a huge impact on Yanni. Yanni faded from public view shortly afterwards. Probably hoping to start his life over again, Yanni instead found himself trapped by the lie he had created to prove the truth. He worked at a chemical plant at one period, which burned off the skin of his fingers, leaving him fingerprint-less. Eventually Yanni found his way to Gourd Lake and set up the boat renting service, where Phoenix encountered him.
Heh, a bit dated, but there you go. :O If it needs to be tweaked or changed for the new setting or whatever let me know i shall do it.
