Today is the 107th running of the Boston Marathon. In addition to the people in suits and dress shoes commuting to work, there were many people on the T wearing jumpsuits and sneakers, heading downtown. I have no idea what it takes to run the marathon, I am pretty sure whatever it is, I don't have it. Just some snippits of conversations overheard this morning:
"Everyone in my family runs 10K races at least every few weeks. I actually asked my boyfriend to join my family on a 10k race as our second date."
"I ran the Ultra a few years ago, but couldn't go on after 53 miles."
"I used to think everybody could break 3 hours, but I guess I am getting old, last year I finished at 3:04."
The last one said by a man who was easily in his late 50s. Unbelievable....
What does this marathon mean for the rest of us? Well, some get a day off from work since the Boston Marathon coincides with the Patriots Day. A multitude of parties are thrown, the best ones along the route of the marathon, where the attendees feel like they are participating in the marathon without any of the sweating or the blisters. After all, it is much better to drink 26 beers than to run 26 miles. Unfortunately I am not a part of that lucky bunch and for the 4th straight year since I've moved to Boston, I am working on this day. But, I get out of work at 12, and after I get home and change I will take my sedentary ass and walk the last 2-3 miles of the marathon just as the fastest people are running by. I will obviously have my camera with me and hope to have some pictures. The plan is to hopefully meet up with some friends at the finish line between 3 and 4 then partake in the festivities that will undoubtedly follow.
