It is either fest or famine for work right now, and I have been working a lot lately.
Progress is continuing on the building, but sometimes I only have a few hours of stuff to do before I run into some issue. Often it is missing parts or unclear code. The owner is very meticulous but still often misses things. It is frustrating but pays well and it’s a very short commute.
Some of the other jobs I have had lately are strange:
I have been assisting the demo of the second floor and roof on a ‘Cob House’. It’s in the back yard of a home in the nicer area of Oakland, (near the lake). The structure was hand built out of sand, clay, and straw, and that is supported by bamboo and sticks. This framework is tied together with everything from string and wire to bungee cords and leather. It is very hard work and we removed several tons of material. This style of building is very strong and even though it was built by many people and is not consistent from area to area I was amazed by the amount of effort it took to destroy parts of it. I am learning a lot about natural building, and teaching them about waste.
The other job was unloading chocolate making equipment for a factory that is starting in San Francisco on Pier 17. The manufacturing line is from a German factory, one of the containers was infested with mold. Ugg, imagine a 3’x4’x12’ machine covered with ¼” of fuzzy multi-colored mold. Any way, I am told this happened all the time and the equipment needs to be cleaned before it gets used anyway and this gives me an opportunity for more work, managing a crew to clean thing stuff. I like the people who are setting this up. They are going to make this as sustainable and Green as possible. The beans will be organic and worker friendly, (like coffee), and the factory will be run with little waste and they hope to put in a Fuel cell, Solar, or some type of Alternative energy.
I finally have all the parts for my slay and hope to set it up soon, as I need to get my truck some oil to run on.
