There and Back Again

Jun 27, 2006 17:11

(A human tale - by me)

Last weekend was... well... awesome.

Backtracking a bit... I received an email on the 18th, telling me about a bride-groom party that I was "invited to" (in quotes since my being in BC was a known disqualifier for my attendance) on the 25th. While at work on the 19th, I began writing the expected 'I wish I could come, but thanks anyway' email, and then questioned why I was writing it. I had one of those hypothetical conversations with myself asking whether I in fact COULD make the party. Could I fly red-eye in to / out of Toronto and actually make the party? I joked about it with a co-worker, who suggested I look up flights / prices.

So I did. The flights were there and on the fairly cheap. My boss overheard my conversation and told me that I may as well take Friday & Monday off since I'd been working weekends for the last few weeks.... which opened up a whole new series of possibilities and even cheaper airfare. Cabin fever hit me, and the next thing I knew, the flights were booked and a rental car was arranged.

I flew into Toronto on Friday, spent the evening with my uncle. Drove to Orillia on Saturday, had a great day. Sitting out at the campfire on Saturday night was probably one of the most relaxing things I've done in the last couple of years. It had been too long since I last had a chance to sit out and enjoy a quiet fire on a clear night. Party was Sunday, and was a great time. I drove to Waterloo on Sunday night, helping deliver people and gifts. Spent the night in Waterloo, watched a movie, and had brunch at Mels on Monday. Drove back to Toronto on Monday afternoon. Flew out of Toronto Monday night (5:00pm est departure), with a mostly empty plane (sweet, sweet, sweet leg room). Touched down in Vancouver at about 6:45pm local time (pst) so I had plenty of time to get home, get dinner, and even catch a game of AOE with the guys from work.

All in all, a great weekend. It was really good to see everyone (my appologies to those of you I didn't see... the trip was whirl-wind enough as it was) and the suprise on Andrew's face when I hopped out of the car at the bus station was rather priceless. It's too bad that CJ couldn't keep his mouth shut... he told Nicole (damn cell phones) while she and Andrew were bussing to Orillia. So close, yet so far.

I'm very much looking forward to August now. :)
