Book #113 -- Sarra Manning, Pretty Things, 259 pages.
The drama is definitely behind the scenes at this summer's production of The Taming of the Shrew. Brie is in love with her gay best friend Charlie, who is in love with playboy Walker, who used to go through a girl a night except now he's in love with militant lesbian Daisy who thinks she's in love with her out-of-town girlfriend, but is starting to have doubts. Daisy also hates Brie, with whom the only thing she has in common is that they both hate Walker, who hates Brie almost as much as Daisy does. Everyone loves Charlie, who just wants everybody to get along. Sound confusing yet? Wait until you read the book -- told in alternating first person among the four main characters. Amazingly, Manning makes it work, turning the confusion into a unique account of four messed-up young adults learning about love and finding themselves.
The drama was a little too high for me, and all the characters had me wanting to slap them silly at different parts, which was probably intentional but isn't my cup of tea either. Still, it was better than I was expecting it to be and they all actually ended up more mature at the end than when they started, which I wasn't sure she was going to pull off.
