Let me preface this by saying I *am* a Trek fan, although TNG was most of my childhood.
I saw the new Trek movie today, and for those fans who were upset or disappointed by it, I must respectfully disagree with you. I thought it was awesome!
Most of what I've heard is people upset because it supposedly invalidates all of Trek canon. But I don't see it that way. Perhaps it's because I read fanfic (yes, I know, you're all shocked) that the idea of an AU (alternate universe) doesn't bother me. As far as I'm concerned, the Trek universe split in two the moment Nero came back through time and in one universe, everything happened as we remember from the series, while in the other we get this awesome new Trek that has made me fall in love all over again with the old characters I only vaguely remember from reruns when I was 6 or 7.
So yeah, I really liked it. And I stopped thinking of Spock as Sylar after about 5 minutes, which shows just how wonderful an actor Zachary Quinto really is. And he was a *great* Spock.
On a side note, I'm a little annoyed at myself that I identified both Eric Bana and Karl Urban as being in the movie, but I mis-identified them as each other. McCoy shows up and I'm like - oh, there's Eric Bana. And halfway through I decide that the reason Nero looks familiar is that he's Karl Urban. But hey, those two look close enough alike to be brothers, so it's not entirely my fault.
