It's been a while.

So it HAS. :D

Camping actually turned out to be rather fun, despite the scorching heat. Then, I worked some more, and I taught little boys about Pascale's Law, and it got to be 104 degrees, and then I went waterskiing, and then canoeing, and in only fiveish days the seventh Harry Potter book is coming out and I am almost too excited to express myself in proper sentences.

I remember when I got my very first Harry Potter book- it was when I was eight years old and a voracious fantasy reader. One of my favorite librarians (back in the city where I knew all the children's librarians by name), Mrs. Bebee, handed me the first book. "I reserved this for you," she said, "It's about a boy who finds out he's a wizard. It's really a good book and I think you'll like it. Being a dedicated reader of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien by that point, and having liked Robin McKinlay, Phillip Pullman, and Patricia C. Wrede, I was hungry for more fantasy and eagerly took it from her. (She had already checked it out for me and set it aside until I came to the library on my thrice-weekly pilgrimage.) I took the book home and promptly forgot about it for a few days. When I finally remembered to read it, I was enthralled. I remember sitting on my bed at ten at night, reading secretively using a pen-light that I had snuck into my room. I finished the first book sometime the next morning, and as soon as we went to the library next I asked for the next book, which I devoured in a similar way. However, when I returned to the library later and requested the third book in the series, I was informed that it wouldn't be published for quite some time. Thus began my cycle of eagerly awaiting the next book in this oddly fascinating series. Am I a hopeless HP geek? Possibly. I do know absurd amounts about the books. I haven't quite gotten to the point of writing fanfiction. However, these books are so much a part of my reading life that there's no way to avoid getting excited. I have been reading them for a little more than half my life, after all.

Oh, and other geekery- The final episode of Doctor Who!
It was quite good, but disappointing in some ways. It was good to see that Martha stepped up to the plate and got to kick some butt. She had that chance coming to her FOREVER, and it couldn't have come at a better time. Ten may have been the one who stepped up and went overtly messianic, but it was Martha that rocked my socks off in this episode. It was HER determination that saved the day. Not even my nigh-unconditional love for David Tennant could help the fact that this series made me seriously disappointed in Ten. Martha was far more intelligent and helpful than Rose ever was, in my opinion, and he completely undervalued her confidence, grit, and competence. So phooey on you, Ten! I'm just glad she got the chance to show him what she could do.

/end geekery

I'm going to see Ratatouille tomorrow- I hope it's as good as it looks. :)
