flashback, 'thougths'
Suzuka just couldn’t take it. She loves her parents and she knows they never asked her for anything before, but this was too much. They were arranging her marriage with a Kusaka Toya, a complete stranger.
She just had to get out of their presence. She was not ready to give her life away. She was only twenty-three, for Pete’s sake!
Suzuka didn’t realize that her feet carried her to the park.
She sat on the ground by the wall and just cried her eyes out.
But she was startled when a voice called out, “Are you okay?”
The voice tugged something in her memories. It seems familiar, but she wasn’t very sure. The voice seems to come from the other side of the wall.
She didn’t know what to do. What if it was a stalker or something? She was so overwhelmed by her feelings she didn’t thought much when she ran out of their house. And it was too dark to see anyone or for anyone to see her.
“I’m sorry but I thought I heard someone crying. It’s okay if you don’t want to answer.”
Before she knew what she was doing, she was pouring her heart out to the stranger. It might have been because she wasn’t in the best state, but just then she wasn’t worried about sharing her worries to this stranger.
After her outburst, the stranger said kind and soothing words that she started tearing up again.
She left the park feeling much better.
That night, all she could think about was the kind stranger. It was a shame she didn’t even know his name.
The next evening, Suzuka again went to the park. She couldn’t stop thinking about him.
“Hello?” She called out.
“You’re here again?” She didn’t know why but she smiled when she heard his voice.
“So are you.”
“You’re Ohgo Suzuka.” It wasn’t a question.
“How did you-?“ Suzuka panicked. She wasn’t sure if it was a good thing that the stranger knows her.
“I’m a fan.” He said. “Don’t worry; I’m not a stalker or anything. I’m just your regular fan.” Strangely, his words calmed her.
“What’s your name?” Suzuka asked.
He didn’t reply at once but when Suzuka was contemplating on taking back her question, he answered.
“Toma.” He said but his tone was uncertain.
From then on, whenever Suzuka have free time, she would go to the park and chat with Toma. Sometimes, he would not be there but most of the time he was.
Sometimes, especially when there’s an occasion, he even leaves gifts for her at her side of the wall.
From being a complete stranger, he became her confidant, her friend and now Suzuka realized she was falling for Toma.
“Toma, can’t we meet?” Suzuka called from her side.
“Don’t we, already?” Toma said from the other side.
“No, I mean face to face. You know how I look but I don’t know what you look like. And come to think of it, you always ask me questions but you never tell me about yourself.”
“Really? I didn’t realize. But Suzuka, I think it’s better if we stayed like this.”
“Why? I want to see you.”
“Well, you’re a celebrity and I’m just a fan. It’s not really a big deal to see your fan, right?”
“I think I've became your fan, too.” Suzuka said softly.
He was silent.
“Maybe some other time.” He finally said.
Suzuka left the park that night in high spirits. She was anticipating the day she could finally see Toma.
A week passed but they hadn’t met in the park. Toma did not show up. But Suzuka wasn’t giving up.
She tried again that night. She went to the park during twilight but the park wasn’t lit up by lampposts like it usually was. It was so dark; she could only see the silhouette of the benches and of their wall.
Gathering her courage, she went ahead even though she can barely see a thing.
She grazed her feet into something and lost her balance. She was expecting to hit the ground but instead she’d fallen into something soft.
“Are you all right?”
“Toma-kun! You’re here!”
“Suzuka. Yeah, but are you hurt?”
“I’m fine.” Suzuka said, standing up. “You’re tall.”
She heard him chuckle.
“Yes. A bit.” He said.
“But it’s not fair! I still can’t see your face!”
“Well, at least there’s no wall between us now. I still think it is better this way. Promise me you won't try to see my face?”
“Ehhh? Why?”
“Just promise me.” He insisted.
“Okay, I promise, but why?” She complained.
“Why do you want to see my face?”
“I want to get to know you.”
“You already know me.”
“Not really. I want to get to know you more.”
“Why?” She heard his smile in his tone.
Suzuka felt her heart ready to burst. She wants him to know.
“Toma-kun… I think… I think I’ve fallen in love with you.”
There was a pause. Neither of them moved. The next thing Suzuka knew, Toma-kun was pulling her to him and smashing his lips to her.
It was bliss but then she realized that Toma-kun’s face is wet.
He’s crying…
He pulled back.
“I’m sorry Suzuka, I just, I never thought you’d feel the same way.” He said.
“You love me, too?” She asked in a whisper. She wanted to hear it from him.
“I loved you ever since I can remember.”
Suzuka too, wanted to cry.
They held each other for the whole night and they fell asleep on the bench but when morning came, Toma was already gone. All that’s left was his jacket wrapped around Suzuka.
-
“You kissed a complete stranger?!” Mirai said half exasperated, half anxious.
“I told you, he’s not a stranger, he’s Toma-kun!”
“Yeah, and that’s about everything you know about him! You don’t even know his full name!”
“I know I love him, and I know he loves me.” Suzuka said stubbornly.
“Please, Suzuka-chan, just for my peace of mind, at least knows what he looks like.”
“But I promise him I wouldn’t.”
“He made you promise?! Don’t you think it’s suspicious that he doesn’t want you to see his face? And besides, what about your omiai?”
“I don’t want to talk about that!”
“Please, Suzuka.” Mirai said dropping her honorific, Suzuka knew she was serious. “Just try, alright? I’m worried about you. I don’t want you to get hurt. Just so we could be sure.” She pleaded.
“Fine.” Suzuka gave in.
But she didn’t try. Not until it was the eve of her omiai meeting.
They met once again in the park. Every time they met, it was always dark, so Suzuka brought a flashlight.
They chat the whole night, they would until they fall asleep; it was their routine. But tonight, Suzuka didn’t sleep.
When she was sure that Toma-kun was asleep, she took her light out and flashed it to Toma-kun.
She didn’t expect it, Toma-kun is Yuto!
“I’ve loved you ever since I can remember.”
‘So even during high school…’
She felt numb that she accidentally let go of the flashlight.
It fell to the ground and the sound woke Yuto up.
He saw the light and saw Suzuka’s shocked face.
“You broke your promise!” He roared and then he left.
Suzuka didn’t go home until dawn broke. When she went home, her mother was waiting for her. She forgot it was her omiai meeting today. But Suzuka was sure she would refuse any guy now.
Her mom pleaded with her and convinced her into at least showing up. She can’t really think straight so she just let them do whatever.
Wearing her black formal dress, Suzuka and her parents went to the meeting place. A restaurant just a little away from their park.
They were the first there. Suzuka didn’t really care either way. All she wanted to do was to go back to her room and drown herself with her tears.
After a little while, the other party came. A kind-looking old man first entered, followed closely by a haughty-looking woman. They must be Mr. and Mrs. Kusaka.
Next came in a young man who must be Kusaka Toya.
She thought he looked like Yuto.
‘I must be hallucinating.’ She thought bitterly.
But then when she looked closer, she realized it really is Yuto.
Suzuka stood up, about to call him, but Yuto spoke first.
“Good afternoon, I’m Kusaka Toya.”
‘Kusaka Toya is Yuto?!’
The meeting progress without Suzuka or Yuto talking much. They just nodded at the right places and answered questions directed at them.
When it was over, Suzuka thought Yuto wouldn’t even acknowledge her. But then he nodded at her.
It was a silent ‘Walk with me?’
Suzuka oblige.
They exited the restaurant and walk in silent until they got to the park.
Suzuka broke the silence.
“You’re Kusaka Toya? What’s going on?”
“I’m sorry Suzuka, for leaving you like that last night, and for not being completely honest.” Yuto said.
Both were silent for a while.
“Kusaka Toya is my older brother.” Yuto continued.
“Your brother?”
“He died when we were little. Mom couldn’t accept it. She lost her sanity. She started calling me Toya. I looked a lot like him, you see. Mom and Dad divorced and Mom remarried Mr. Kusaka and that’s how I became Kusaka Toya.”
Suzuka’s tears were silently falling.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you that first night that I’m Yuto or that I’m Toya. I just, I was so happy when I heard that it was you… even if you were actually Toya’s omiai partner. But I was Toya. But I didn’t want you to marry me because of that. For once I wanted to feel that I’m not just Toya’s substitute. I wanted to feel like I’m me. And I wanted you to see me. I wanted you to love the real me, to love Yuto, not Toya. I wanted you to love me back because I love you so much. Was that too much to ask?” He asked softly.
Suzuka didn’t speak at once. She was absorbing everything she heard. When Yuto was about to go, she spoke.
“It wasn’t. You don’t have to say sorry. You were easy to love. I love you whether your name is Toya or Yuto or even Toma. I love only you.”
She beamed at him, moved closer and stood on tiptoe to press a kiss against his cheek. But Yuto, apparently noticing her movement, tilted his head and leaned down, slanting his lips over hers.
