It may be a british thing or just an alternate spelling. I always have a problem with gray and grey. I can never remember which one of them is the English spelling and which is the American spelling. People always tell me I'm spelling it wrong when I know I'm not. I'm just different, that's all...

Knowing me, it's a British thing. I'm used to getting checked on "theatre", but I refuse to spell it "theater".

I rather prefer "grey" generally, but I just spell it whichever way I feel like it. :)

Agreed on both counts. I think I use "cancelled" generally, but I might also use "traveled," so I'm not very consistent.

I use "travelled" and "modelled", which are the only other two examples I can think of.

I read enough British literature that I occasionally find myself typing "honour" or "colour", especially when talking about British literature. :)

Me, too. And I use "leant" for "loaned" and I say "sussed" and such things. I've been told my speech has an odd cadence, which I think is part Austen, part Whedon, and part Beatle. I'm also from the South, so although I don't have a Southern accent, my speech is peppered with the occasional "y'all" or "fixin' to."

Heh. I got into trouble a while back for commenting on how difficult it was for me to leave the u out of "Cordelia's Honor".

Strangely enough, I never have any trouble with "The Time Traveler's Wife". (That's the spelling that appears on my British edition. UK publishers don't usually change the spelling of American novels.)
