I guess I really shouldn't be surprised, possibly even grateful that I was able to finish out the novel before a cold put me down for the count. Thing I have found, that will kill shows for me, like Firefly, is the rabid, obsessive fans who are appalled when you say that you don't think it's the best thing since sliced bread.
I was more surprised that you didn't like Torchwood that much since I have been finding that a lot of the gays really appreciate Jack because he's, for a change, not a comic relief, not an emo-aids case, etc etc.. and he's just an average guy with an odd situation of immortality who just happens to enjoy the company of men, women, everyone...
I only asked last night if you had seen the new stuff because I have seen people (myself included) who immediately wrote Dr. Who's new stuff off on the old serieses. So I always like to at least know if someone's given it a chance. But in the end, I think that some people just enjoy some things and don't enjoy other things. It's all a matter of taste.
I don't squee with delight over Firefly like the rest of the world. It's okay, but it wasn't my thing. I don't squee with delight over Smallville, in fact, I laugh my ass off at how absurdly stupid it is, to me (outside of Lex's hotness) and my husband LOVES it.
But I don't think you're a total freak of nature because it isn't your thing. I just always like to at least know if someone's seen it before they say "I didn't like it!" (Besides, I agree with you, Tom Baker is the complete ickiness ... except the scarf is cool! :p )
