Random Rules: The Return

Mar 26, 2008 12:16

So this is just a standard mem to get me back into the posting mood in a way that isn't inherently depressing. Rules are pretty simple. Set your mp3 player, whatever it is, to random/shuffle/whatever, and list out the ten songs that come up, explain why you have it, no skipping, tag three at the end.

1. Garbage - "Queer": What a song to start with. What can I say? I love Scottish grrls. :) I snagged this from a friend who's also a huge Garbage fan, and I just like the smooth-yet-still-in-the-gutter quality of Shirley Manson's voice. I think this was originally snagged for a gaming soundtrack, a song for a rather messed up NPC, Wanda Babylon, one of my favorite NPCs I'd ever gotten to know.
2. Linkin Park - My December (Mickey P. ft. Kelly Ali): It seems everyone "too cool to care" hates Linkin Park now unless it's a track off the Reanimation album, but I still remember when everyone was listening to them. I had completely forgotten about the album, to be honest, and I'd started snatching remixes off WinMX. After a while I just wanted them all and bought the album to save me the hassle of dl'ing on a dial-up connection. I guess the RIAA was wrong in that regard.
3. Bif Naked - "Stolen Sidewalk": It was Buffy the Vampire Slayer and SSX Tricky that got me into Bif, with "Lucky" and "Leader" respectively. I remember when I was initially conceptualizing CD2 and thinking of the relationship between James and Cale, this song was playing, and I wished that the song began with something other than "I'm a junkie, I'm a whore", so that it would be perfect for the two of them.
4. Rage Against The Machine - "Guerilla Radio": It's pretty safe to say that The Battle of Los Angeles is the only Rage album that I actually own. The rest is random downloads. I'll admit when I first heard this song I had no idea who Mumia Abu Jamal was, and now I'm going to the college where he's an alumni.
5. Bif Naked - "Lucky": Weird how you can invoke those things. Over 1,000 tracks (small collection, I know) and it picks that one. Like I said, I got into this song because of Buffy, this being the song played while Buffy sleeps with Parker and the fanbase felt betrayed because it wasn't Angel and she wasn't screwing Angel yet. That and she did it on the first date.
6. Radiohead - "Motion Picture Soundtrack": I like a few of their songs, which is why I usually just dump the albums onto my playlists, which is the case here. I really don't go for Radiohead much. OK Computer was probably my favorite album, and Kid A really only had "Optimistic" for me. All I can think when I'm listening to this one is "My god, is it still going?"
7. The Offspring - "The Noose": I will never apologize for liking The Offspring. Splinter is probably one of my favorite albums, if only for "Lightning Rod" which inspired a major character trait for James. Their music just gets me moving, into that state where you just close your eyes and move with the beat and mouth out the lyrics. Why should I apologize for liking that?
8. Green Day - "Whatshername": From one hated pop-punk band to the next. It's from American Idiot, so I suppose it's alright. If you wonder why Green Day is on my list, see the Offspring entry.
9. Foo Fighters - "In Your Honor": I just love the way this song builds. I love Dave Grohl, I cling to the Foo Fighters as a way of never letting go of St. Kurt, yes, much like a lot of the people who continue to buy Foo Fighters albums.
10. Dave Matthews Band - "When The World Ends" (Oakenfold Remix): You know how when you see a movie trailer and think "I HAVE to see that"? It was like that with me. I saw the trailer for The Matrix: Reloaded, and heard this song. I still hear Morpheus talking about how the War could be over tomorrow and see cars flipping in slow motion on the freeway whenever I hear this song.
