* I said this would be a marathon and not a sprint, but it's always harder living it than imagining it. The dismantling of the already inadequate protections on our civil rights and liberties has been relentless as well as an incredible amount of basic institutions we need to function in a modern society all in under two months. It's depressing to see so much progress roll back so quickly and the constant effort and vigilance required to resist is exhausting. I said back in November that we need artists and comedians and musicians too. This is why. When it is darkest, we must find and savor our moments of delight. I know this is an old song, with a loooong history in the labour movement particularly, but the sentiment it expresses seems to fit this struggle as well as it has so many in the past.
