* After forage, we dragged the dead TV out. Exhausted, I just wanted to lung and watch the rest of Vikings. Only the picture was out again on the TV. I tried shaking it, as it's sometimes a loose connection inside. I tried all the connections. Rinse and repeat several times. It seemed wildly unfair to wake Squirrel up again, so i had to drag the bedroom TV out again. Which means no bedroom TV. Again. Let's hope Freecycle comes through with a decent TV again, preferably quickly.
* Next time you hear someone belittling fanfic and fanart, remember there is ancient Greek and Roman fanfic and fan art, and most of medieval and early modern literature, including most of Shakespeare is fanfic. Humans make fanfic and/or if you hand them a stylus/pen and tell them a story. We have all these Greek pottery things where they have a race from the Iliad, and they would have different guys coming in different places so you could get the vase or drinking cup or whatever with your favorite guy winning. Back when the Iliad was an oral formulaic poem, the poets would travel around the Greek speaking world to different city states and they'd change bits around to give the local hero a nice part in it. Visual artists do the same. Seriously, fanfic is at least as old as civilization and if it was good enough for Chaucer and Shakespeare we should not as a culture piss on women in particular for creating and enjoying it. (Somehow it's totally okay when straight men do it, but illegitimate for everyone else). I shake my fist at the media every time someone turns up to poopoo it, because it's generally this transparent sexist/elitist bullshit. You can not tell me Romeo and Juliette isn't transformative art. He took it from a moralizing translation into English by a minor poet and made it his own so it wasn't even first hand fanfic. It's more like someone's Elementary fanfic, Elementary being Doyle fanfic. Don't ever let anyone make you feel like you are less for enjoying the things you enjoy that aren't hurting anyone. This is the most human of activities, going all the way back to when the first person changed up a fireside tale to better suit their interests and/or that of the audience.

- The Next Phase. I like that Geordi holds up his hand and lets her meet it to test mutual solidity, letting her choose to meet him halfway. Geordi's response makes sense to me both from a character perspective and because he knows about that thing that happened to Doctor Crusher.
I am mulling Ensign Ro's response as both a contrast representing how a lot of people would respond in that circumstance and for her character personally. I'm not sure if I can word it, properly. I like the way she hints at the depth of religion and culture we're going to see later on Bajor in DS9. There is something fundamentally relatable about her complex relationship with her childhood religion and her horror at the thought of having to sit through hours of her own death chant. I like that even though we only have this one example of a Bajoran that we've looked at in any depth and she's only been in a few episodes we have a real sense that she's part of a culture with a long history and a huge range of opinion and degrees of engagement with elements in her culture. That feels realistic in a way a lot of Science fiction races aren't as they tend to be presented as monolithic, just as inhabited planets often inexplicable only have one climate. There feels like there's only really one right way to be a Klingon, a Vulcon, or a Romulan, even though politics can differ between individuals and factions. Even with the small glimpses the Bajorans we've gotten so far, Bajor feels more like a living culture with subcultures and more realistic variation.
I really do like the little Data/Worf scene about funeral planning and belief. It was good the way the trying to buy a wedding gift as outsiders scene was good, only deeper with actual exploration of Worf's character. I like the way this episode gets a little deeper into Trekverse religion, personal beliefs, and the way different people mourn. I've written before about the initial falure to properly mourn Tasha in first season and how they tried to fix that later. We've seen how the crew mourns. Now we see how they think about death and the afterlife if any.
I their place, I'd be tempted to write HELP over and over with the disruptor, or make disruptions in 3.14 intervals, or do circles, not that it matters, but if there was a pattern it might have gotten Data's attention sooner.
Is her dinner with Geordi her first crew friendship out side of when they all had amnesia?
- The Inner Light. This one is all to real, considering Trump and Republican climate denial. Wow, they really guessed wrong on how Patrick Stewart aged.
