-I think "Pen Pals" is the first time I've actually liked Riker even a little on the rewatch. It's the scene where he mentors Wesley Crusher, of all things.
- I love that they keep seriously debating the ethics of the Prime Directive instead of just Kirking it. I love that Data is arguing on the side of humanitarian rescue. I love that Picard questions where the limits of intervention, something I wish our Congress would give a try once and a while.
- Each time Picard gives an inch, he gives the impression he is already picturing the Court Martial. he gives this wonderful long suffering sigh before he beams down to the planet.
-I stand by my belief that more than one Q per season is too much Q.
- Me watching "Up the Long Ladder:" Is Polaski initiating Klingon mating ritual by accident or on purpose?
- Did they steal the foot washing seduction from the leg washing seduction in the old Michael York Three Musketeers?
- The Irish Stereotypes here are as bad as Finnegan's Rainbow, possibly worse. Ugh.
- This is an interesting variation on the right to choose debate at least. When was the last time I saw a modern show that looked at the idea of bodily integrity and whether people get to decide if they reproduce themselves or if someone else gets to do it for the "greater good." Riker demands, "We certainly have the right to exercise control over our own bodies." Bonus points for Riker killing his own fetus with a phasor. I wonder if they could have gotten that past modern network censors?
- One of the things I find frustrating about TNG, is I can often see perfectly sensible and ethical compromises for problems that they don't bother to explore before giving the hard no. Riker has every right to say no and forcing people to reproduce against their will is always wrong, but couldn't they have put out a ship wide call for volunteers in the beginning? What are the chances everyone on board would have said no? I'm not saying the long term solution proposed isn't good, but wouldn't the extra genetic material help, while letting them to keep some of their customs?
