http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/object-of-intrigue-londons-lifesaving-publicly-accessible-enema-kits * So DS9 is my favorite Star Trek franchise and Cisco is my favorite Captain, but I haven't seen them since the last season was on the air. I've started a rewatch. It's a rare occasion where my original opinions still hold true after this much time. I was not much fond of the plot of the pilot at the time, but love Cisco, Kira, and Odo particularly off the bat and that's still true. I still deeply delight in Garrick (introduced second episode and forgotten about for what feels like way too many episodes). The set design is perfect for what it's trying to convey. I love Bajoran culture. I love the gloriously cranky hundred year old Bajoran judge in the Dax trial episode. The Cardassins are ridiculously well designed both as a visual design and a culture.
All this time later, I still think they spend way to much time on Miles O'Brian, who was bland and boring on TNG and here is bland and boring only in the foreground. (Plus I have residual dislike of the character because of stuff that hasn't happened yet). I had honestly forgotten how annoying and puppish first season Bashir was, though my opinion of his actor's handsomeness hasn't changed a jot. I am loving all over again the female characters rolling their eyes at his ego. I know I'll love him too once the character grows up a little, but for now, it's fun watching him strike out despite his goo looks. I keep getting startled by how young Jake is, as my mental picture of him is from series end instead of the beginning.
First time around I thought Jadzia Dax was bland, likely because she got overshadowed by stronger characters in the first few episodes. This time around, I'm impressed by the acting, which is often subtle, and I like what they are trying to do with her and Trills in general better. I suspect I might have still been subconsciously blaming Star Trek in general for the way TNG wimped out on gender and orientation issues. (I was holding a completely unfair grudge against Johnathon Frakes for the worst of these disappointments, one I still grit my teeth over, until I learned earlier this year that he did want to do things properly and protested the network wimping out. I wish my friends and I had know at the time because we were furious. Anyway, I apologize for a couple decades of unfair grudge against Mr. Frakes).
The two things that really don't hold up so far are 1. wincingly bad early CGI Odo morphing effects, and 2. the embarrassingly primitive computers. These are tiny compared to shows I love like classic Who, but I mention them as they are pretty much the only things so far that don't stand up to a decades later rewatch. I stand by my deep fondness for DS9 and it's still my favorite Star Trek. I am having a genuinely good time watching.
This morning I hit the first episode that flat out made no sense. I get the point was to seed long arc information about Changelings, but the plot flat out makes no sense as it hinges on Odo (Odo!) failing to arrest the Miradon for trying to sell stolen goods and on suspicion of Piracy, thus leaving him free to hunt the runabout. It's flat out not in character for Odo to miss that especially as the Changeling distraction comes after he inexplicably fails to arrest the guy. Still, we're past the halfway mark on season one and that's a long time for Star Trek to go without a plot completely falling apart, though there have been several other borderline ones at this point (I'm looking at you Quark gaming episode).
