* Tavy spent the morning hiding in plain sight on the fireplace ledge, alternately napping and watching me type. Once the guests left I retired to my room, in the firm belief that he was waiting to have the room to himself to explore properly and have a nosh. My original plan involved geographic separation of the cats until the smells got familiar, but she's lazy, in late middle age, and not fond of jumping, whereas he's tiny, fast, and loves heights. As more than half of his observed hiding places in the first twelve hours were places she either couldn't fit or wouldn't go, I decided it was safe to let them overlap. LM is quite excited every time she smells him, but has not tried to get close yet and he's staying out of her way. When I woke up, he was perched on my window sill, hiding behind the fan, where he stayed to watch me finish the riveting Chaos Choreography. (I'd love to see the In Cryptid books done as a quality TV series). I left him some treats and left him to it. After dinner, I spotted LM going in to check out the stranger and followed. She got close enough for them to look at each other properly, but she opted to go back to her territory, what with me there watching them.
I'm giving the little guy lots of space on purpose. This doesn't mean I'm not excited he's here, it's that I'm trying to minimize stress on a small animal that has been through a lot in the last 8-9 months he's been alive, and has just taken an all day road trip from an environment with a lot of cats and two humans he knows and likes to a strange place with one other cat and two strange, possibly dangerous humans and all sorts of unfamiliar smells. I am establishing that I'm calm and friendly, and not prone to attacks or sudden lunges. I figure when he's more comfortable I'll start working on being friends. My hope is that he'll home base in my room as it's a place LM goes for naps, but has always been Elder kitty and my turf primarily, just as Squirrel's room has always belonged to him and the junior beasties primarily, with the common areas overlapping ground mostly under my jurisdiction. (Elder beasties used to go into Squirrel's room and the Butt used to pile into bed with me and the Elder Beasties often as not, but there's a difference between home turf other people have visiting rights on, shared turf, and someone else's you have visiting and sometimes napping rights in.) Anyway, my hope is he'll move into a lot of Hector's spaces since they have similar taste in perches and mests. I was in no shape for dealing with getting him registered as cat in residence. I've hope's of doing it Monday, though there is a chance of later in the week.
