* What happened to the Rest of the Black Sails Rewatch?

The rewatch process currently takes literally hours, as it involves two watchings of the show in entirety, plus multiple rewatchings of certain scenes on top of that, plus all the writing. This represents 4-6 hours if you also count resulting correspondence. So basically, RL ate me. It happens. I promise there will be more commentary, and people are welcome to write in with comments and questions and pointing out things I missed or messed up. Seriously, I enjoy the conversations. Currently my RL is time and spoons intensive on Wednesdays and Thursdays, made worse by a really badly timed dentist appointment. I am super short on spoons and sleep, but I have hopes of poking at Black sails some more this weekend.

* Sex and Rape in Black Sails vs. Game of Thrones (TW: Rape):

Admittedly Max/Eleanor was a little male gazy, but it’s nothing next to game of thrones, and all the other sex scenes center women’s pleasure and woman’s agency. Seasons one and two of Got have nearly identical scenes in which Littlefinger criticizes his women sex workers for not faking convincingly for his make gaze and by extension the viewers. The sex workers dressed as the seven in season 5 have their heads mostly out of frame since the camera is crotch focused. There is tons of gratuitous female nudity. The few men you see naked are flaccid and generally not the characters you’d have picked for prurience (Hodor and his massive danging dick for example). Compare crap like that to the brief Max/Eleanor scene I referenced, where you get two quick glimpses of naked Max: one in an establishing shot to make sure you know what is happening. One of Max’s face that picks up part of her breast to get her reaction shot. The rest is all about Anne’s face because Anne’s pleasure matters. Anne’s pleasure matters because women’s sexual pleasure very much matters in Black sails. It matters to her partners. It very much matters to the plot. As a result, they show us her face as she experiences that pleasure, briefly and with a minimum of prurience. Latter, when she does undress, it is about showing them her scars (yes, Jack has seen her naked before, but the way she is showing them both together at the same time she is showing Max the first time felt significant). It is also very much about her reclaiming her body and her sexual agency. She is showing her lovers Who She Is, scars and all. So even though what we are seeing is nudity framed in a classically painterly way, the camera mostly focuses on the scars, her face peeking back at them to see how they are reacting, and to the reaction shots of Jack and Max as they gaze at her in her entirety, and have a silent conversation with each other about what Anne is silently proposing. Contrast her quiet bliss with the fake moans in the GoT sexposition scenes, and contrast both with Miranda/Flint in season one where Miranda is pretty clearly trying to be loud as possible for Richard Guthrie in the next room. Exaggeration or not, she is pretty clearly using flint as a flesh dildo. The exercise is of no particular interest to him beyond the academic. In that scene, the shooting angles are most from behind for her and are focused on his bemused facial reactions, which I think is the other point of the scene. He’s obliging her agenda or agendas here. What pleasure to be had is hers. In GoT female nudity is always about the straight male gaze. When there is an info dump/exposition to be done, they lazily throw naked women into the scene. Sometimes GoT literally lines streets with bare breasts as scenery occasionally when they can’t figure out how else to meet the naked breasts quota. They toss naked women into scenes pretty much anywhere you can shoe horn them in..

Then look how both shows handle rape. While on BS, Max’ rape is important to her, to other women in the story, to the plot itself. What do we see of it? A very brief (few seconds) of her clothed with a man up her skirts. It’s not sexualized at all and it is clear that multiple character think it is wrong and that it a terrible. We do see the aftermath of her later brutalization by Hammond, but the actually raping isn’t on screen except for that brief clothed glimpse. The actual screen time around the rape is mostly about Max, Eleanor, and Anne responding to the rape. Black sails makes the rape about the women, and how they feel about it and what they do in response. Compare that to the close up attempted rape of Sansa in season two, her terror in close up, each folding and tear of her clothes in loving detail, or the season five stripping and raping of Sansa as part of Theon Greyjoy’s character arc, rather than Sansas. It’s not quite as obscenely porny as Outlander’s rapes, but oh does it try. Got randomly adds porny rapes, like Jaime’s rape of Cersei, then never deals with any consequences that result to the rape survivor, mostly because the show runners don’t grasp that they ARE depicting rape, and most of the time, they do not care. It Got, rape is all about the straight male gaze, or the joy certain people erive of seeing a young girl or woman being harmed, or the men. how do the men feel about this rape? how do the men react to it? In Black Sails, rape is about the survivors (We know Anne is a survivor from he backstory. Eleanor at minimum saw women raped as a child when the Spanish sacked Nassau, per her speech to Miranda about why they need a fort. We don’t know one way or the other what else might have happened to Eleanor, but she at minimum has a damned clear idea of why what was happening to Max is horrific), and the way they feel, and what they do in response. The women in Black Sails consistently make rape political as well as personal.

Totally different handlings.
