http://www.kuriositas.com/2012/12/frost-flowers-natures-exquisite-ice.html * It was snowing tonight on the other side of the border. Here, there was a cold wind blowing off the bay carrying rain. There was talk of possible snow here in the near future, and that would mean me being trapped in my cave. This week's gay meet up was at a restaurant I liked, so I dragged myself out for an airing. It was lucky for them, I did, as fewer than average came, and they needed one more body to justify the size of the reservation. The nice thing was I could mostly hear the conversation, even with my ear trouble. The attendees were the leader, the Navy Guy, one of the nicer older guys I'd seen around but not conversed with much, a guy who's physically to my taste and pleasant enough but not the right sort of personality to pursue, and a cute guy I think I've seen once before, but not had a chance to talk to. I was sitting next to him, and he's still on my maybe list. There was talk of various things, like the new cinema, technological change, and the like. Talk did eventually turn to marriage. None of us were marrying, even Navy Guy who's got a long term boyfriend. Everyone was really happy about it though, despite them being angry about the folks who didn't live to get there and the fact that everybody doesn't have it yet even now. I definitely share their opinion that this should have happened decades ago. Still, there was talk of people various of us knew who were getting married. There's a open to everyone church wedding on Friday, and cute guy was all excited and talking about wanting to bring presents and catch a bouquet. It was really heart warming. I keep thinking how weird it must be for the pre-Stonewall guys to suddenly have a option they never thought they might have growing up. The pre-Stonewall guys fascinate me. I am still learning the language, really. I think it's as complex as the language of flirtation I grew up with back east, but oh so much more subtle and some of the rhythms are different. It makes sense really, given the dangers. I wish I had more chances to work on it, to learn to calibrate myself better since this is likely my future. I can not dance anymore, and I've never been much for the bars. I can at least make friends and relearn how to flirt for fun with this new language. I haven't quite figured out how best to fish for their stories. You'd think it'd be easy give all the time I spent fishing for stories in the old men's corner at adult parties when I was a child, but I'm having trouble finding the right bait and the right hooks for these guys. Now and then I get glimpses of riches. Today it was talk of crank phones and party lines. Imagine starting out life on a small family farm with a crank phone and living into the age of texting and youtube videos of men getting legally married. I get whip lash just thinking of it, imagine living it.
* Remember how I wished I could see the Criminal Minds folks hunting the Winchester Boys? (Both worlds are equally fictional). I think I would like to see Sherlock Holmes (either modern version) hunting the Leverage crew. That would be fun.
