Not Dead Yet

Oh for the good old days, when Torchwood fandom was consumed with the need for S2 to be confirmed asap...

But nostalgia will get me nowhere (this could possibly be taken as a hint, please do what you will with it), so instead, in an attempt to look forward, I'm going to cling desperately to those few straws of positivity that I can find.

Such as this (from a WalesOnline interview with Eve Myles 21/02/10)

...Eve remained unusually tight-lipped when asked whether she would be working on a US version.

She said: “Honestly, I’m the worst person in the world at keeping secrets because my whole face is so expressive. I say one thing and my face will say something else.

“But truly, I’m waiting with everyone else to get the thumbs-up. We don’t know and that’s the truth. We’ve no idea how, what, or where they’re going to do it.

“I wish I could give you some juicy gossip, like we’re doing 55 episodes and it’s being filmed in the Antarctic, but I just don’t know.”

Eve is hoping they make a fourth series, following on from the success of Children Of Earth, which was a big hit not just in the UK, but in Asia, America and Australia and is hoping her character Gwen, pregnant at the end of the last series, is moving in a new direction.

She said: “Where I’d like to see her going is exactly where she is going, with a revolver in the left hand and a bottle of milk in the right, and carrying a papoose.

“She’s going to be a super-mum. But not in a way that’s unachievable.”

My tenuous and possibly risible straw of the day there was the fact that she didn't say 'if'! How, what, or where are the factors for her, not IF.

And then there's the Barrowman:

(from an interview in the Mirror)

... John revealed that there had still been no green light regarding a new series of Torchwood, even though Russell T Davies has said he's already written another 15 episodes and the last mini-series of the show on BBC1 landed six million viewers.

First rumours said it was due to start shooting at the start of this year, but now there's speculation that it may be axed in the current BBC cuts.

John said he was equally unsure about the future of the show.

He said: "If I’m asked to go back and do Torchwood, I will at the drop of a hat go and do it. It’s just a question of when.

"But if they were to ask me to come back, of course I would. Look, Captain Jack changed my life, I’m not going to dump him."

And of course his comments on Jonathan Ross to the effect that he's been saying too much, and has been told to keep his mouth shut...

Okay, so he *does* say 'if' in the Mirror interview - it's not exactly what you'd call uber-positive! - especially following his confident announcement in November that TW S4 was ready in all but logistics, but it's clear that they still want to make a fourth season. The actors are willing, Rusty has (apparently) written the scripts, it's being talked about in the media and it's still being discussed behind the scenes, including that maybe-if-possibly US Pilot.

It's not dead yet may well be the worst motivational speech ever made, but it's true. We're not seeing anything definite in either direction, but Torchwood isn't dead. Not yet. Not if the props are sold and the sets demolished. It doesn't need an SUV or a Hub. Those are finshed with now. Whatever happens next will be new. And yes, that does mean whether it's on screen, on the radio or in books, or 'only' in fic.

All those with a say in the matter (possibly with the exception of bean-counters at the Beeb) have said that they want it to continue - and personally, through all the ongoing fannish dissection of reactions to character death, writer's integrity (or lack of it), there are two things I can't get out of my head.

One is Gwen's devastation on that hillside when Jack left, and how the solidity of her relationship with Rhys has always supported her determination - and will continue to do so.

And the other ... is that after everything he's been through, and all the people he's lost, I saw Jack smile on New Year's Day .

s4, speculation
