terranova sale! the shopper in me just coudn't resist. saved over a thousand bucks on two pairs of jeans =)
i promised myself i'd read over the summer, so thursday i picked up a copy of sarah dunant's the birth of venus at national bookstore. the story captivates, one of those i-can't-put-you-down kinds. it's about a wealthy young girl in love with knowledge and art, but who's constrained from pursuing her passions by the constraints of fifteenth century florentine society. although she is fascinated by the young painter who comes to decorate the family chapel, she is soon married off to an older man to afford her protection from increasing political instability in the city. anyhoo, her husband turns out to like guys more than girls, and he agrees to give her the freedom she wants if she'll keep the marriage for the sake of the family name. and what she does with her newfound freedom...well, i'm not finished with that yet.
the book is historical fiction, set against the backdrop of the renaissance. The rule of the Medicis is failing, and a frenzied monk is strewing terror among the people with a message of redemption through extreme asceticism. the text is rich with word images that make the story come alive--beauty, pain, extravagance, horror--everything that makes for an enthralling read.
if i seem like such an eager beaver, it's because reading is a form of intellectual stimulation that has been denied me almost the entire school year. sad, i know =(
my internet explorer keeps on hanging, so i switched to mozilla firefox a few days ago. i think my IE's infected with trojan virus or something. but firefox seems to work just as well. what do you think?
just got home from bio barkada dinner and coffee at greenhills. the conversations were sooOoo funny, haha, and i laughed like there was no tomorrow. now that we're going our separate ways, how many more carefree gimik nights can we have like this one?
*tears*
