I think it's pretty inevitable that Morgana will turn 'to the dark side' as it were at some point - it's been made clear by Katie, by several writers and by the show's producers that that's the path they intend to take the character down. Katie herself referred to Morgana as 'ultimately evil' in one of the episode commentaries.

Katie's also said that Morgana might start dabbling in black magic in series 2, so it looks like they're going to be developing her powers beyond just Seeing, and also that they intend to speed up the process of her turning. Part of me thinks the dragon might have something to do with that - that, with Merlin now refusing to listen to him, he might get Morgana to help set him free. Or it could be some other issue, almost certainly to do with Uther's tyranny.

My suspiscion would be that Uther decides to do something like execute a bunch of people accused of witchcraft, and Morgana decides to stop him using magic - probably dark magic, like a curse or something of that nature. Morgana is caught by Uther and at that point there's a show down culminating in her being told to leave Camelot or face execution. Still, if this happens it will either have to be temporary (ie: Uther either relents or dies) or happen at the very end of the series, since I don't see the show's producers just writing Morgana out in the second series.

The producers have also said that they have a 'five year plan' for the show, so I think how they handle the pace at which Morgana goes to the dark side depends on how they intend to tell the story of Arthur. Are they strictly telling a prequel, meaning that they will bring the show to a close at the point where the legends normally start (with Arthur newly coronated as king)? Or are they going to overlap with the legends and start re-telling those as well?

If this is strictly a prequel, then they will have ot pace Morgana's development slowly, so that she can truly be Arthur's enemy by the end of the story, setting up all the elements for what happens during the legends between them. If it's not strictly a sequel but more of a re-telling, and we actually see Arthur become king during the series (perhaps at the beginning of the last series?) then they may want to speed Morgana's story up and then nuance it, so that we see her go very dark and then gradually come back to the light. (Given that, by the end of the legends, she is Arthur's devoted sister again, and not his enemy).

There was an interview released recently (if you look in some of the general Merlin comms you'll find it - it was only a week or two ago), I can't remember which one, which had comments from a couple of cast members on what was happening in the second series and Katie mentioned that her story lines were getting darker and that Morgana might even start doing some black magic.

And the 'five year plan' was a comment from the producers/creators that was in a bunch of interviews in the run up to the first series.

thanks for that, i'll have a look for it :)

i quite like it when a show know where it's going in the long run, i think you get better stories

Welcome! Yeah, it makes me feel a lot safer when the producers have a clear idea of what they're doing. It makes the over-arching plot of the show feel a lot more coherant, and it means we're unlikely to be in for any nasty surprises (alla Marian's death during the second series finale of Robin Hood, which was a plot pointed pulled out of the show runner's ass if ever I saw one).
