In celebration of this comm's one hundredth entry (which will be the next one), I am planning a small fic challenge (the first of several over the next few months) that will hopefully be loads of fun for all involved.
The challenge is to write AUs involving the female cast members of Merlin (male cast members can also be involved, but the primary focus of any plot should be on the women).
Tomorrow, I will make a post for people to suggest prompts, then a week later I will make a master list of prompts and throw the floor open to claims. After that, you will have a month to complete your story/stories.
Anyway, prompts will be divided broadly into three categories:
1. Minor-AUs:
Where the canon of the show is basically intact but minor details have been altered. For instance: Instead of Merlin, Gwen is the one who is poisoned by Nimueh in 'The Poisoned Challice' and Morgana has to save her; or What would have happened had Hunith come with Merlin to Camelot when he first left home?
2. Mid-range AUs:
This is where the setting and basic laws of the Merlin-universe have been left intact, but the canon has been drastically altered. For instance: Gwen and Morgana are both men. Or Gwen is king Uther's ward and Morgana is her maid.
3. Total AUs:
Where the only thing that remains the same is the characters and everything else has been completely re-written. For instance: Morgana is a modern day popstar and Gwen is a journalist sent to interview her for a magazine. Or Nimueh is the madam in charge of a Victorian brothel and Gwen, Morgana and Sophia are her employees.
Some rules - feel free to suggest alternatives or suggest your own - anything you think would be helpful:
1. Prompts should contain a pairing or be specifically called 'gen'. If you don't specify a pairing, it will be assumed that the prompt is for a gen fic.
2. Prompts can be het, slash or gen, so long as they centre on one or more female characters on the show (femmeslash is greatly encouraged, though -_^).
3. If you submit a prompt, it would be nice if you could also try to complete one.
4. Fics can be anywhere from drabble-length to full-blown epics.
5. Since AUs can turn into epics quite easily, don't worry about submitting a completed novel-length fic. If you feel like something is going to be so long that you wont be able to finish it before the deadline (or at all), just write as much as you can, submit what you have on the deadline and, if you don't plan on finishing it, add a summery of how you would finish the fic if you had the time/patience.
6. Each prompt can only be claimed once. If we get plenty of participants (say... more than fifteen) then we can up this and say that each prompt can be claimed twice. But if we have only a small number of participants we'll get a wider spread of work if we stick to a one claimant per prompt system.
