I finally got to see the new Star Trek movie last Thursday night, and here's my review:
IT. WAS. FUCKIN. AMAZING. The visuals were top-notch. They added a more modern twist to the ships interior and exterior. There was the perfect blend of action and plot. The dialogue was VERY well written; and included classic gems such as "I'M A DOCTOR NOT A PHYSIST!" The movie included so many references that I had this huge smile on my face throughout most of the showing. My brother and his girlfriend, along with Mary were with me; and Will kept having to answer Katie's questions about the movie lol. It was cute. The whole movie flowed together beautifully, and I admit, my heart skipped a few beats when Leonard Nimoy first appeared. He is a sci-fi legend and it made me so happy to see him there! His role in the movie was really sweet and it was a great way to show what happened to Spock after we saw him in "Unification" (Parts 1 and 2) on TNG.
But the most important part of the movie, and the one I was most concerned about is how CANON the film is. At first, it doesn't appear completly canon, but about halfway through, a very important plot element is revealed that in my opinion explains everything. The theme of alternate realities/parallel universes/alternate timelines is not foreign in Star Trek canon. The reality that the crew are in a now alternated reality adds a whole new dimension to the Star Trek universe. Well, when futuristic Romulans go back in time and kill alot of people, not to mention destroying a planet, that will change things up just a tad. xp There's also an unexpected romance between two of the crew, but despite the "wtf" factor, it actually works.
I know there are Trekkies and Trekkers who are critical of the film b/c of the canon issues. I admit, that because of the events in the film, certain crew members will cease to exist in later Star Trek shows. That I am concerned about. But I also believe that the timeline will work itself out, like it's been done in the past. "First Contact" and one of the "Enterprise" episodes where they find some Borg in the North Pole anyone? The various "Voyager" episodes that involved time travelling 29th century officers restoring the timeline? The timeline craziness also left open some plot assumptions that eases my mind, as well as other Trekkers (ex: the families of certain crewmembers from later Trek shows may not have been at the places that were destroyed).....well hopefully other Trekkers.
I also watched a special on the movie awhile ago, and they interviewed people who said that it's 100% canon, since they saw the movie before anyone else. Even actors who starred in Star Trek shows said that it was a great film. There's an overwhelming amount of support from credible sources for this movie. Obviously J.J. Abrams did something right when he took the project on.
Abrams did a great job and breathed new life into a beloved 42 year old franchise. I can't wait until it comes out on DVD, and/or just go back to the theatre and watch it again!!!
