I'm worried about my carbon footprint

So I've been facing some really weird thoughts recently. I usually drive no more than 2 times a week, going down to campus and back, and that doesn't mean I don't travel by car places. Peter and I are probably out about 4 times a week. What this leads to is that I would like a more efficient vehicle. My Jetta is a sweet ride and I love it but I've found out recently that to make diesel takes way more oil than making gasoline, which is not good.
My first impulse is something like a smart car. They are amazing and cute and get 33 mpg in the city. Granted that is almost the same miles per gallon I get with my Jetta but she is diesel so it would improve my overall carbon footprint. Not to mention that for some cute, little, sporty car it is fairly cheap with a price tag of $15,000 speced out the way I want. The only thing that gets me though is, what about when I want to move things or people? What do I do then? Well I would need someone with a standard sized vehicle to lend a hand.
I have continued to poke around and I have now found something even better, a totally electric scooter. The Vectrix is 100% electric. That means no oil, no gas, and no point source emission ever! It may be a bit pricey (Vectrix=$11,990) compared to other scooters (Vespa approx=$3,000) but you never have to buy gas ever. The only major draw back would be going anywhere further than about 30 miles away from my place because it has a range. Now granted in the city when I would be averaging around 35 mph I could go for 54 miles (says their site) but I wouldn't be able to get to my parent's place in Salado in one charge. Which means I would need convenient access to someone else's car on a fairly regular basis. Not to mention I think it would be funny to try and find a place to charge my scooter at my apartment. So if I was to get one of these two things I would get a smart car probably, though the scooter idea totally rocks my socks
The conclusion I've come to is that I would have to be married and be a two vehicle family with one standard vehicle to make it work. This is a strange conclusion to come to but it is the one I've reached.

Does that make sense or have I journeyed even further from sane?

I wonder what my father would say if I told him that I wanted to sell the Jetta and get a smart car?

P.S. I also got a new layout and I made a new mood theme. I like them both but I'm totally suckered by Kathryn's idea and I want a Girl Genius theme.
