My throat is throbbing as I stalk through the alley, the scent of oil and smoke just teasing me, and I fight to find the path that will make the scent stronger-take me towards her. It’s storming, and the lightning in the distance doesn’t do anything to light up the gloom of the night, and the raindrops are doing their best to falter my steady, purposeful steps. She needed to be found, and she was running, but she should know that it would be useless.

I find her scrambling to pry open the metal gate leading to a church beyond. She’s going with the classics, I can see, as she bolts inside to grab the first cross she comes across. I sneer, advancing on her in the church’s candlelight before wrapping my hand around the wood and seeing her eyes widen in fear made the last three days of hunting her worthwhile.

“Please...don’t...” she stammered.

“Funny, I recall screaming those words as you locked me in that cold, dark room...” I crouched down to her level, holding her chin in my hand and forcing her to look at my now silver eyes. “I remember crying in terror as you laughed and counted out the time.”

She shook as I took her wrist, and put it against my chest, letting her feel the lack of heartbeat under my breast before kissing her wrist’s pulse point. “Don’t be afraid,” I mocked, “after all, there’s no such thing as vampires, right?”
