Life in Bedford Falls

As part of the renovation of my office space, we are redoing the wallpaper that goes from the foyer down the hall and up the stairs. It is a LOT of wallpaper. I have a really good wallpaper person, though. She's the one who was redoing the wallpaper in Small Boy's bedroom while I was in labor with him. ("Excuse me, just let yourself out, I need to leave for a bit.")

The paper is in varying degrees of worn. Ela wore the area of the wall she hung out against. Small Boy discovered a sharpie when he was around two. As part of this renovation I had the electrified gas wall sconces removed and replaced with wiring from this century (and track lighting to illuminate artwork.) The wallpaper was ready to go.

She and her crew stripped the paper today.

We found the signatures of the people who put it up, in 1945.

The house was built in 1885. That family left us a Frederick Law Olmsted landscape and a set of legal books from the 19th century. Also oil cloth floor covering in the servant's quarters. They sold around 1944 to the family we bought it from in 1998.

That family must have done this wallpaper. Seventy years ago. Woah. I have four swatches on order so we can tape them up to get a good test of how we will like it. I find the idea of decorating for the next eighty years to be really intimidating.
