I went for a run at lunch-time with Small Boy on his bike alongside me. I don't normally blog about Small Boy's runs and/or bike rides with me, because I choose to forget how whiny and annoying he is on these occasions. Sweat or rain or humidity dampen his spirits. Mosquitoes and gnats endlessly bug him. So it might not seem noteworthy to you when I say that he was cheerful and good company, even though he was bleeding and bugs still exist in this world.
We went a back entrance into the park that calls for Small Boy to ride his bike down a short winding narrow section of the road. As luck would have it, cars were coming from both directions as he navigated it and he had to hug the side really tightly. Raspberry bushes growing in the scrub grabbed out for him and drew blood. He kept riding through the sting, though, until he could pull safely off the road into the park entrance. That's where I caught up with him. He was starting to whine a little and I grabbed his arm to inspect the blood and made silly kissing it better motions to jolly him. "Mmmm", I said, "bloooood." He laughed and said, "well, blood IS salty and delicious." And at that point, he was my son again, not minding a little blood, ready to ride.
He's getting pretty good with his new bike. It's much lighter than his last one, and a really good size for him. Tomorrow is his first day at the new school and we're set to walk the mile there, but I know it won't be long before it occurs to him to ride it, instead. I'll be very sorry if that happens (and so will Ela) because I think the two mile walk each morning is going to do me good. (It just occurred to me that the small font of nine bus routes that we got in the mail might mean that he could take a bus instead of walk the mile. God, I hope that's not an option! I'm not even going to look.)
More pluses for the day:
+While out for my jog I serendipitously ran into someone who I needed to call about a scheduling snafu and we got it straightened out. I love how the Universe sends me what I need when I get out there.
+Someone makes sculptural stone piles in the park, surprising me with joy when I run across one.
+Some morning glory seeds I planted last spring, that I thought were duds, finally germinated and are now flowering on my lattice, surprising me with their blueness.
+The weather reminded me of 9/11/01 today and that made me sad and felt vaguely ominous... but then no planes got flown into buildings and so the day turned out to just be a beautiful fall day and my crazy brain got a slapdown.
