Fools, let me show you them.

I had five clients scheduled for today (I always have a light day on Fridays, but I also had an unfilled slot.)

1. One rescheduled with no notice because it's not quite April 15th, why do I need to see him yet?

2. Another one was finished in February. Why are they back? Because they totally forgot about their $80K in investment income and had been fighting about it between themselves and finally one spouse won and they decided to tell me in case it was something that needed to go on their tax return.

3. One was a repeat visit. I'd given her a detailed, written list of what holes we needed to fill in on her tax return and this was her appointment to fill in the holes. She brought none of the missing material. She's the middle of these five fingers.

4. One was a new visit. He made a worthy effort to total up his business and rental income, but made up every one of his expenses and completely neglected the mileage questions again. When I looked it over I didn't see enough money to buy groceries and I asked how he was staying alive. He took out his retirement fund (at the age of 47) and used that to live on. Why, did I need to know that? Because it's with a whole pile of "official tax documents" he left at home. Oh, and he wants to know if he can refinance his three mortgages. His AGI (not including the now empty retirement money) was negative. Um. Sure. Why not. Yay Obama!

5. Another called yesterday to schedule to come pick up the returns I had finished preparing. I was surprised this morning to see that my receptionist had booked them an hour's time. They were just picking up the returns, that doesn't usually require me. Guess what: they decided to show me their 1099-DIVs from two brokerage accounts.

Guys?

Does anyone ELSE think it makes sense to hide 1099's from your tax accountant?

T-11 and 80 left to go.  I'm praying some of the 17 people who haven't called to schedule yet are not actually planning on coming back.  My in-house inventory is 27 waiting to finish right now.  The "are they done yet" calls aren't going to my receptionist anymore: now my clients all go straight to email.  I get five a day asking.
