I tend to overachieve in this department, too. I do a Christmas letter and include it in cards that go to many, many people. Many of these folks I haven't seen in years, though I don't send to anyone I've not met. It has kept some neat connections, forged, though, and I get a lot of positive feedback from people I just can't snip the connection to. I think that sort of thing is worth all the effort.
