Becoming unhinged

I'm not a democrat. I swear I am not. I'm not a republican, either. I'm somewhere in the middle, economically conservative but socially liberal. I get along well with Libertarians, but not White Supremacists. I'm a feminist, and also in favor of a well-regulated militia (which we do NOT currently have.) I don't have a party, but that's okay, I'm ( Read more... )

feminism, intellectual liberal, economics, racism, politics

It might feel like worse than you can deal with right now, but I’ve been thinking about how there have been far worse times than these. Difficult times are what make history as people fight through them, and while this may indeed be the worst of our lifetimes, that just shows how lucky we’ve been til now, to live in this lifetime.
This is not the worst point in human history, it’s not even the worst point in American history: this is a country where people owned other human beings as slaves, after all, and where invaders killed off 98% of an indigenous population. This is not the worst anything. Fighting this, exterminating this particular wave of fascism, is a really important thing. I’m reminding myself that fighters have, throughout history, kept humanity progressing forward, through even darker periods than this one. Like “what would Harriet Tubman do?” Because the work is important and necessary in a way I may not be used to, or have ever seen, but it’s only new to me, not new to history.

Thank you, taking a longer view does help. The arc of history and all that.

I recall watching Trump laud Andrew Jackson and laughing at him for being uneducated. I didn't realize that he wished to be as awful as Andrew Jackson. Perhaps this is America's version of a bimbo eruption. Every now and then we just elect a genocidal maniac.

There have been worse times than these, and unfortunately that's what's troubling. So far as I can see, fully one third of the voting public in America is either indifferent to the damage Trump is doing, or they enthusiastically support it. And things aren't yet bad enough for a critical mass of the rest of us to change things. I think this gets much worse before it gets better.

I said that same last sentence myself aloud just yesterday. I agree.

There is a lot of work ahead. And some people are going to be hurt really bad before it gets done. But that’s why it’s so important we do the work.
