End of semester!

Hurrah, the vacations are only two days away, I can say I really could use a rest! But woah, this semester totally kicked ass, we got so much cool stuff done, and on the whole, I think I can say that everything went rather smoothly. Only one more painting assignement to do, let's do it!

Today was a really awesome day! I think I mentioned earlier that the juniors (3rd years) are making group films this year, and today was the screening of their leicca reels so far! I must say though, it was a bit disapointing. I felt there were maybe only 4-5 reels out of 15 or so that really worked and were entertainning, the rest were either, at different levels, confusing, pointless/anti-climaxic or poorly assembled. This might sound a bit harsh, but it seemed to be most people's opinion after the screening, and the audience reacion spoke for itself too during the screening. I mean, it really was disapointing in some cases, the concept stuff we had seen early this semester seemed pretty promising, but apparently some just didn't manage to get through the group work dynamic well enough. Hopefully some of the issues will get resolved during production next semester, I really wanna see these films do well.

But gladly the day wasn't over! Two hours later we were having our weekly story lecture with the entire sophomore class, and our teacher surprised us by bringing in a selection of the leicca reels we had handed in last week. And woah, I was blown away!!! There were some seriously awesome stories in there, it totally inspired me and gave me back faith in our class! Seriously, almost every reel I saw then had a really original, entertaining and well-told story. I'm so glad, I want to see those films animated! So yeah, it seems like there are a bunch of people in my year who have a good sense of story, I can't wait to see what's gonna pop out next year!

I myself am pretty glad with the way my reel's going so far. I used my last animation assignement to animate a test for one of the scenes in the story, and I just tried putting it in the reel today. I found it fit pretty well with the music and everything, I must say I'm getting pretty pumped to animate that thing! 3 minutes, roughly 4 characters, it might be suicide but heck, I'll never know if I don't try it!

Tommorow my lifedrawing teacher's taking my group to an exhibit in Toronto called Body Worlds 2, it's gonna kick ass!! The exhibit is basically, from my point of view, a scientific freak show: human cadavers that were skinned, injected with plastic and positionned in odd manners (muscles lifted from body, bodies cut in half, and so on) right after their death. It seriously looks freaky, but apparently a bunch of middle and high schools go there on fieldtrips all the time, so I guess it mustn't be that bad. But anyway, the point is, it'll be AWESOME for studying anatomy, gonna be skecthing big time!

Oh and btw, the visit from Pixar I mentioned in my previous post was actually a guest lecture from Scott Caple, one of the lead layout/environment design artists on the Incredibles and many other films. He also came here last semester, but it's always cool to get a visit from such a brilliant artist, so yeah, cool stuff!

Alright, I'm off to bed now, gotta survive those last two days! Happy holidays everyone and Merry Christmas!
