Update time! Weeks are becoming hella busy over here, and every day brings a new adventure (who'd a thunk Oakville could bring such a big amount of action in one's life), so here's the past week's review! I'll throw in some technical details about Sheridan Animation department specs, since this is, after all, a journal made for informing people about how the school really works.

Friday september 24:
First big college party! I had life drawing class in the afternoon and some guys were talking about a huge party that was gonna happen later on in the evening. I'd heard about it earlier in the week but didn't think much of it, but then, seeing as a bunch of people in my class were going, I decided to tag along, and dragged Elliot (kicking and screaming, of course) with me. You know, just out of curiosity. The thing was happening in some Oakville house owned by students, and since it was a 30 minute walk to get there, all the people in residence who were going decided to team up and go there in one huge mob at 9:30. Once there, it turned out to be pretty cool, to my great surprise, and the evening went along pretty nicely. Then at 1 AM things started getting really interesting. Basically the cops came down and trashed the party (the neighbors had probably called because of all the noise, which is understandable, I guess). It was all done oderly and peacefully, thank God. Anyway, some people migrated to an other student house/basement after that, so my pals and I decided to check it out. It turned out to be pretty lame at that other place, so we just called it a night and came back to residence around 2PM.

Saturday
Was pretty uneventful. Went to throw some baseballs with Eric and Gordon (dude from BC) in the afternoon. For some obscure reason I always manage to hurt myself when I play sports, and that day was no exception. Received the baseball right smack on the nose at some point, making my glasses fly out in the dust in a dramatic fashion. Thankfully no important damage was done to my glasses nor my nose.

The rest of the week consisted mostly of homework. The way first year works here at Sheridan is that each student is assigned an animation desk in the main classroom, but since there are so many students, each desk gets 4 or 5 students assigned to it. There's also an other, smaller room with animation desks for first years to work on. So far that system has been working alright, but I definately wouldn't want to finish any animation assignement at the last minute, since that might be what most students will do, and the student/desk ratio is bound to bring conflict in those situations. It's all good though, this week was pretty fun as the classes were always half-filled during the evening, which makes a stimulating environment to work in for various homework. Everybody here is so talented and motivated, and the atmosphere among first years is definately friendly and collaborative. Very stimulating!

As a side note, second years and third years have a desk/cube assigned for each student, so it does get better. I have no idea what's gonna happen in two years when the program gets its first set of fourth years though, since that'll require a bunch of new desks for the added number of students. For those who don't know, the animation program here is currently switching from a 3-year diploma to a 4-year degree. Thankfully, I'm in the second batch of the degree program, so hopefully by the time I reach 4th year most of the problems encoutered with the first batch will have been solved. I feel kinda bad for the first batch though, who are currently in second year.

Tuesday September 28
After the last class on Tuesday, Eric came by my room and we decided to go explore the woods some more. Elliot had told me that there was a big tunnel somewhere deeper in the woods, so we went looking for that. And we did find it! It's basically a huge man-made underground water streem tunnel, with barely an inch deep of water flowing in it. Strange eery noises were coming from within, and no light watshoever could be seen from the other side. Of course, we decided to go in! Now, that was creepy. The tunnel went on for kilometers, and we could see absolutly nothing in the dark. Cars seemed to go by above us, but the resulting sounds were quite similar to a huge beast moaning and grunting. Finally after about 20 minutes of walking blindly, we emerged from the earth's bowels and into the bright sunlight, right in front of the big shopping mall south of Sheridan. COOLEST EXPERIENCE EVER! We then went to some nice burger restaurant and I ended the evening doing homework in the animation lab.

Wednesday September 29
Not much to tell. I spent 2 hours cooking dinner in the evening (some pasta caserole), and it actually turned out pretty dang good! Forgot to takes pictures though, so the next episode of my culinary adventures will have to wait for next time. Again, I ended the evening doing homework in the animation lab.

Thursday September 30
After school I went to the theatre with Elliot and some of his friends to watch Napoleon Dynamite. That movie was AWESOME, I highly recomend it to anyone who likes comedy and is open to small budget productions. We went to the 10 o'clock showing, so we got out just in time to catch the last bus at 12:05. But we were all very stupid and waited for it on the wrong side of the road. Of course, the driver didn't stop to check if we were mistaken. So we all grithed our teeth and walked back to residence. It's a 90 minute walk. Argh. But it went by pretty fast, since the people I was with are quite a nice bunch, and also since Elliot has a particular knack for sprouting nonsense absurd conversations. Good times! :D

Oh, and this week was the Animation Roadshow's visit to Sheridan. Basically it's a bookstore temporarily setting up shop in the main huge hall of the college. But not just any bookstore; the awesome, out of this world kind of bookstore. They sell tons of rare artbooks, comics, anatomy books, artist sketch books, and much more, all at discount price. I ended up buying the concept art book for Monsters Inc., along with an awesome anatomy book for artists.

I hope this entry wasn't too disorderly, I've been lacking a lot of sleep in the past few days and arranging thoughts in an orderly fashion is being a bit tedious here. Anyway, peace out!
