Ye Gods! I’m done so very done. Went back to the doctor today - the super vitamin specialist it took 2 months to get an appointment with - we had the blood test results. Go figure - my vitamin D levels are so low they are undetectable, yes can’t be reported by the lab it is so low. My calcium is 8.5 - the normal range is 8.4-14.6 - but here is where it gets fun. Your body uses calcium everyday whether you are absorbing from outside sources like food or supplements. If you don’t have new calcium coming in then your body pulls from your bones by releasing Parathyriod hormone. So if you have a high level of that it is a sure sign your body is pulling calcium from your bones - especially when accompanied by a low vitamin D level - cause vitamin D is what the body uses to metabolize incoming calcium. Again, I’m not a medical doctor - but I’m soon to be a PhD with some serious research skills and I have figured this one out. The huge amount of bone pain I’m living with comes from the bones losing calcium and becoming spongy. I know this cause you can cause me to scream and burst into tears if I lay on my side and you put pressure down on my pelvic bone - cause mine will bend like wet wood. That is where all my pain comes from my bones bending under the weight and stress of movement - but the glorious part is that there is no escape; resting causes just as much pain. The only time I don’t feel pain is when I’m in water; like a pool or spa or bath. Cause the pain comes from the weight of the muscles pulling on the bones. To help with the pain - I do a lot of muscle building exercises targeting the core and lower abdominals and thighs. The spine, pelvic bone and femurs carry the most calcium and are the places where your body leaches from first. Tis why my hips are always in so much pain.
So the Doctor looks at my test as states, “Well normally results like this would indicate severe bone loss, but you too young - you would have had to be losing bone for five to six years . . .” I reminded him that I have been experiencing mal-absorption for seven almost eight years. OH and remember I broke four ribs a couple of weeks ago in a minor incident which should not have resulted in fracture with healthy bones. So he closes the file and begins to ask me a string of weird questions about my being a professional actor and getting a PhD. I answer for five or so minutes then ask him, “what does this have to do with my treatment?”
He replies, “Well, knowing you are an actor I need to discern if all of this is about you seeking attention.”
My jaw hit the floor and I laughed. I asked him, “when do I get to discern if you are a moron?” He stood and explained to me that the course of treatment would be to have me come back in six weeks and until then I should try to drink more milk and eat hard cheese. He gave me a referral for a pain clinic - so I can go get more handfuls of narcotics. Now this doctor has diagnosed me with osteomalasia and he has validated why I have bone pain from this condition, but for some reason he can’t seem to understand that taking more pills that won’t absorb will not solve it. It drives me crazy - how every time I go to a new specialist that they can’t read the heaping file of blood tests, mri’s, cat scans and dexa scans as proof - no they always need to see for them self and meanwhile my bone keep losing and I keep hurting. Just like what happened with my hemoglobin - getting to near death levels before anyone would believe it was an issue. I will have to break my pelvic bone or spine in order for any of the doctors to act. I was so damn mad on the way home from the doctor’s office that I kept seeing all the different ways to crash my car.
So I’m done. Just done. At least I have enough Lortab and beer to sleep through the bulk of the next four weeks.
