my disjointed fangirly ramblings about H50 3x01

Sep 25, 2012 22:40

I don't think I have to tell anyone around here how wonderful it was to get to watch a new episode of H50 again, do I? :D I think I never realized how much I missed H50 until now.

So, here's my reaction:

[BIG FAT SPOILERS FOR H50 3x01]
In short, I loved it. :) There wasn't a single scene or character portrayal I disliked. Some thoughts:

Doris McGarrett
In my opinion, she's a great addition to the show and I hope we'll get to see more of her. I loved the reunion scene between her and Steve - lots and lots of great emotions there on both sides. I can't really say I like her character, but I love how Christine Lahti portrays her. I was never sure if I can trust her or not, even if there were moments when I wanted to. Her emotions towards Steve seemed to be strong and true, but she has something very Joe-ish about her - closed off, secretive, and dominant.

Steve
I was so happy that there wasn't any kind of dreaded (by me) sweet reunion scene. I loved that Steve didn't make it easy for his mom, that he confronted her and showed clearly how hurt he was by her actions and that he did not understand or condone what she did to himself and Mary. This only changed the moment he thought he had lost her again... and that was a really sweet scene. I'm not sure if I feel more sorry for Steve for having to let her go again, or for discovering she was once again keeping secrets from him after she was gone. *hugs him*

Danny
I absolutely loved the tension between Danny and Doris! :D It's exactly the kind of scene I would have wanted to see between Danny and Joe, just once. The conversation in the car between Steve and Danny about Danny's decision to fight Rachel left me with mixed feelings. While Steve is probably right that a fight between her parents wouldn't benefit Grace (to say the least),  the Danny-Steve (or McDanno) part of me wanted him to be relieved that Danny had decided to fight for staying in Hawaii this time. Also, while Rachel's motivation is understandable, I think Danny and Grace should be more than forced appendages to Rachel and Stan and they obviously both don't want to leave Hawaii.

Chin
I loved all the Chin scenes - the grief, the guilt and the pain were so intense and real. Daniel Dae Kim did such a wonderful job here and I was relieved that the makers of the show didn't turn him into something like a dark avenging angel on a solo mission for half of season 3 (I have to admit I almost expected them to after all that talk about breaking him down and building him up again). I did expect him to ruthlessly get his revenge, though not quite so early, but what surprised me was that we got to see him break down in the end. That scene where he walks through his and Malia's house, the lovingly layed table, the meal waiting in the stove - it was so heartbreaking. *hugs him*

Kono
I really loved learning that Chin found a way to try and save both Mali and Kono. I also loved that was no bad blood between the cousins at all about Chin's initial decision. I think it wasn't really necessary to have Adam rescuing Kono (she could have found a way to save herself) , but I don't really mind that he came to the rescue. I really like them together and I hope Adam will stay one of the good guys.

Catherine
<3 More, please? I like to see her kicking ass, and her relationship with Steve's mom is off to an interesting rocky start. *g* Also, Steve asking her to babysit his mom was just... sweet. ;-)

Wo Fat
OMG, that rescue mission was so James Bond! I wonder if something like that is really possible in RL? Not that I really care - it was simply a great, over-the-top, H50-ish action scene. Wo Fat escaping didn't surprise me at all - I expected it the moment Steve told his mom she'd be safe now. :3 What did surprise me was the scene between Doris and Wo Fat. While Danny's question of why Doris didn't shoot Wo Fat is a very valid one, I'm even more interested in finding out why Wo Fat didn't shoot her. She is Shelburne, after all, and he seemed to be willing to go to any lengths (including capturing and torturing Steve, among other things) to find her and kill her. I can't really believe he didn't shoot only to avoid being shot in return. I'm intrigued!

All in all, season 3 is off to a great start.  It's so interesting that Delano is already out of the picture and Steve's mom seems to be, too, for the moment. Season 3 doesn't seem to be about what I thought it would be about and I can't wait to see where they are going with this. I'll probably think off at least a hundred things I wanted to say once I hit the "post"-button, but that's it for now. :)
