Strange happening

The mate and I have been quite...uh, busy, of late. We've been making ready for our latest arrivals, ensuring a warm and tastefully decorated nest for the most recent set of eggs, which arrived earlier this week. As always, the eggs appear perfect. Their older siblings have been independent for some time now, and so we felt it was time for some more babies. Everything was going quite well, until we got a good look at the nest today.

I am completely certain there were not this many eggs in the nest yesterday. What's more, so is my mate.

The mate can be a very sound sleeper, but is not usually when she's incubating. Neither of us noticed anything. Yet there is a fourth egg, and unless one of the other eggs grew a great deal overnight, it is a good bit larger than the others.

We have decided that however this egg got here, we should probably humor it and take care of it, as it has done us no harm. Perhaps it was sent by my lord Manwe. The Valar can work in mysterious ways and this would explain why we noticed nothing. Still, it is a most disturbing mystery.

Well, I must be off again, as the mate has a craving for marmot. That will take me some time to locate.
