~ That's a sight that was never meant to be seen.~
I grimaced, thinking about the many lives that could have been lost if the circumstances had been just slightly different.
The new L4 expansion arm that had just about been ready to open for people to move in had nearly sheared in half when a heavily loaded shuttle had come down hard on its landing. The stresses had caused a crack in the outer hull, and the inner one had burst under the strain it was suddenly placed under. It was a dramatic example of what can happen if building materials have flaws in them. Or safety margins are ignored.
~ You can see all the way into the interior. ~
I suppressed a shudder.
Living in a colony, it was easy to get accustomed to having the ability to walk around without a space suit.
But in the back of my mind the knowledge that you were living in a precariously balanced bubble of atmosphere never left. The same was true of a shuttle, or even a space suit. And sometimes it put me on edge.
~ Life in space is a life of extremes. Hot and cold. Atmosphere and vacuum. And if the bubble breaks, you die. ~
Heero drifted over towards me from where he'd been sitting in the cockpit. We'd turned off the artificial gravity. No need to waste energy on it, since we were both comfortable without it. "Duo?"
I tore my eyes away from the oddly mesmerizing wreck of twisted steel and titanium. "Yeah?"
"You're thinking too much."
"Eh?"
"It bothers you."
It was a statement, not a question. I nodded. "Yeah."
"Did you call the Commander?"
It was a distraction, but a welcome one. Heero knows me almost too well at times. "We have authority to take charge, but only if we see something happen that breaks ESUN law. Until then we just supervise. So we have plenty of time to sit on our asses and wait."
"Hn."
"Yeah, yeah, I know. It could be worse. I'm kinda glad Quat's not here to see this. He'd be having a fit..." It drew my attention back to the wreckage limply drifting in space.
"You're brooding."
I gave him a crooked smirk. "I know. Can't help it, though."
"We don't have to check in with the colony agents for another hour."
"... and?"
I could almost have sworn he hid a disappointed look. A couple of pieces fell into place. ~ Oh, is that how you want to spend your downtime? ~
He had turned to retreat back to the shuttle's cockpit. Knowing he couldn't see it, I smirked. ~ Well, then. Why not? ~
A plan quickly forming, I lined myself up carefully and kicked off.
I caught him under his arms just as he moved to do the same. He tensed and a startled sound escaped him as we spun in midair above the shuttle's seats. "Duo?"
"Hm?" I put out a hand to keep us from bumping into the ceiling. "Not in the mood to have fun, after all?"
A slightly startled look. "Here?"
"Why not?" The hand I hadn't needed to stop us from crashing into the ceiling had started wandering, exploring.
"Duo..."
He didn't sound upset. "What?"
"Do you have any idea how that would actually work in zero gee?"
I hadn't thought about that. Physics. Damn. "I'm sure we can come up with something..."
