“Why do you study so hard, Po?” Maggie leaned in the doorway and eyed Sally’s textbook-cluttered desk with no small amount of amusement.
“I want to become a doctor - it’s very hard work,” Sally said. She turned. “Besides, my parents taught me that if I want to achieve anything good, I have to give it my all. Not everyone has model-blonde looks and loose standards to get them through university.” She softened her comment with a smile, and Maggie threw her head back, laughed.
“I don’t really sleep with the TAs and you know it.”
“I know,” Sally said. But it’s never going to be an option for me. I have to do things the right way.
“Well, good luck,” Maggie said. “Maybe sometime you’ll come out with us.”
Sally, distracted with identifying a slide of a virus, didn’t notice Maggie walk away.

Sally had worked hard for this promotion, and she was excited to be working alongside the famed Lieutenant Treize of the Specials, but she was still a Po, and she wasn’t sure she liked what was going on with L5. She’d stood on the observation deck, staring at the spinning colony for a long time before she finally retired to her cabin to keep working.
Under the microscope, the virus looked especially potent, and Sally was sure it would be as effective as Treize hoped for and more.
“Hey Po, you gonna stop with the science geek thing and come out with us?” one of the other med interns asked.
Sally shook her head absently. “No, I need to run the infection scenario one more time.”
“One day, Sally, you’ll come with us. Wait and see.” And the intern walked away.
Two days later, after watching the Colony almost burn and seeing an incredible machine fight in space, Sally realized that, despite all her hard work, she’d lost sight of what her parents had taught her. They’d told her to work hard to do the right thing, and she’d worked hard, but...she certainly hadn’t done the right thing, not to the girl from L5 who’d been fighting in that mobile suit. This time, the interns didn’t even bother to ask if she wanted to go out with them, and she stayed locked in her room until the ship landed back on earth.

I’m doing the right thing this time, Sally told herself as she raced toward the dock. She’d find that Gundam and bring it to the soldier who needed it, do right by him and the colonies and everyone who was innocent in this disaster.
When those forty men turned up, she was hardly going to say no to their help, and afterwards, when the suit was recovered and everyone was safe, they asked her if she wanted to go out to celebrate. She said yes.

The other soldiers eyed the white-clad boy.
“He’s uptight, isn’t he?”
Sally glanced at him. “Hey, Wufei, want to come out with us?”
